“We need to take her to the medical unit,” Caleb said as he picked her up.
“You stay here with him.” He ran out of the room with Ari on his back. I rubbed my face.
Why did she suddenly collapse like that?
She’s not hurt, is she?
I paced around the room blindly.
What if the diaries were wrong?
Was she still not healed up yet?
I felt something come under my foot, making me halt in my tracks. Ari’s dagger chain was left forgotten on the floor. I gently picked it up and brushed any specks of dirt.
She’ll be fine. I have to believe in her.
She’s much stronger than me.
I shove the chain into my pants pocket. I sat in front of Krishna and watched for any signs of unease or anything.
How did he become an exorcist?
Why did he become one?
A lock of wavy hair had fallen on his eyes. This guy is full of mysteries. He suddenly opened his eyes and stared back. His warm eyes didn’t even flinch; instead, they seemed to look amused. I pushed back from him when I noticed we were too close. I cleared my throat and looked elsewhere.
“We need to go to the medical unit immediately.”
“Why?”
“She had suddenly collapsed when you guys were training.” I turned around to see him pick up his flute and tuck it safely behind his pants.
“Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s go.” He walked in front of me as we rushed to the medical unit in the science division. As we ran downstairs, I texted Caleb for the room number and waited for him to reply. I cursed out loud when he was taking forever to respond and earned a disappointed glance from Krishna.
Why won’t he answer my phone?
My legs burned, and my lungs screamed for oxygen, but I didn’t stop moving. My phone suddenly buzzed out loud, and I quickly glanced to see it was Caleb’s text.
Caleb: Room 423, don’t worry, the doc’s checking her. So far, I don’t think it’s serious.
I don’t believe him until I see for certain she’s fine.
“She’s in room 423,” I told Krishna.
“Did they find anything?” he asked me while running. “So far they haven't.” Once we arrived at the medical unit, we quickly looked for the room. I threw open the door to see Ari lying on the bed with her eyes closed, but a glucose drip was inserted in her arm. Caleb sat in a chair next to her bed, his phone in hand. He hadn’t noticed that he wasn’t alone anymore. I silently walked toward the back of his chair.
“What did the doctor say?” I asked behind Caleb, who had jumped out of his seat in response.
He exhaled loudly, “She was just dehydrated.” A burden was suddenly lifted off my worries. My legs gave out, and I slumped to the ground. I laughed out loud hysterically and brushed a tear before it could slide down my cheek.
“Dehydration?” I kept on laughing while the others stayed quiet. Then slowly those laughs turned into sobs as tears ran down my face uncontrollably.
“I was so scared,” I cried out, brushing the loose tears off. Caleb walked towards me, then gently brought me to my feet with his arms around my shoulder.
“Come on, let’s not disturb her. Krishna, you coming?” He nodded in reply and followed us out the door. We slowly walked down the hallway. Caleb pulled out his phone and was too busy typing away. Nurses and doctors walked past us, and the fluorescent lights cast shadows around us. Caleb suddenly halted and looked at our faces.
“Why don't you both go out to town for a little bit. Go and get some fresh air,” he said as he gently pushed Krishna’s shoulders. Krishna and I glanced at each other, then looked away.
Well, what is there for us to do?
We quietly walked into the elevators and waited to go down to the ground floor. The elevator seemed slow and loud... It seemed too small here.
Why can’t I seem to be able to breathe anymore? I clenched my chest tightly, willing my heart to calm down.
I’m gonna die here!
“Do you like dessert?” A voice said, bringing me back to the world. I turned my attention to Krishna, who was leaning against the wall in an uncaring manner, but his eyes seemed like they could see right through me.
“What?” I was confused. He shoved his hands into his pockets.
“I asked if you liked dessert,” he repeated. I was unsure where the question was coming from, but answered, “Yeah.”
He closed his eyes for a bit, then opened them again, “Good, because I’m starving.” The elevator doors opened, and I quickly got out. Krishna pushed off the wall and followed after me.
