I never expected to write a story like this. Let alone be a story about Donald Duck of all things, but something one day compelled me to do it. In some ways, it might just be a calling just like the plucky duck’s own calling. I think it goes without saying that this story uses quite a lot of Christian themes. In all honesty, I think it benefits the story more than if I wrote it from a more worldly perspective.
I never meant to choose Donald Duck as a vehicle for this story. But part-in-part he came to be just what I needed for this story to come together. I think it's because of my awareness of some of Donald’s many adventures that this story came to be. I mean, Donald IS one of the few inspirations that inspired adventure books of my own like The Adventures of Jean-Luc & Joey. I think it's fair that I pay the ultimate homage by writing a story for the duck who didn’t know when to give up.
From the books to even the revered animated series, DuckTales, Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge, and the nephews go on some fantastic journeys to some incredible places. There’s nowhere they haven’t gone and no one they haven’t encountered that’s given them less than a hard time. I’ve been in love with adventure stories since I was born, but none have given me such a pure love for the journey and all that it brings than the Donald and Scrooge stories. Well, maybe except a quirky sponge and a spectacular space ranger.
I’ve already got my hands on a nice big book and a couple of random original comic book issues from back in the day. After this, I might go and collect some more! The works of Carl Barks and Don Rosa have inspired many generations of adventurous writers and duck lovers worldwide, especially in Europe! But to me, a goofy American, Donald will always be that inspiration that teaches me to never give up, even when the odds are stacked against me.
Life is a journey that takes us to unexpected places. Sometimes, we get called to do crazy things, even if they do not seem normal to our mundane ways of living. It’s our choice to heed the call after all. So if there’s a calling that only you can answer, take it. You may find yourself going on a journey that’ll take you to some amazing places. Oh, and one more thing… HAPPY 91 years, Donald Duck! Here’s to a century and beyond. And as for you, good reader, I hope to see you in the next Goon Toon Book! Give the world a smile, and don’t forget to…
BE TOONTASTIC~!
