Becoming Cahn: Seaside Love Song

Verse, Episode 6: How Do I Say Goodbye

Verse, Episode 6: How Do I Say Goodbye

Feb 23, 2026

The comforting scent of sautéed mushrooms and fresh cilantro permeated the apartment, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that spoke of home and family. Yet, for all its coziness, it also served to sharpen the pangs of hunger in my stomach, a growl so pronounced that Bastien, ever the observant one, couldn't help but let out a soft snicker from his post at the stove.

“Patience, rookie,” he teased, his eyes glinting playfully as he stirred a simmering pot.

“I could be patient,” I retorted, leaning against the doorframe, a feigned pout on my lips, “if you’d actually let me help.”

A swift "Nope" cut through the air, courtesy of Ace, who, with the practiced ease of a seasoned chef, expertly flipped a piece of saltimbocca in a sizzling pan. “This is strictly a two-chef kitchen tonight, my friend. You, Cahn, are on standby.”

I slumped against the doorframe, pretending to sulk, though in truth, there was a quiet, satisfying rhythm to watching them work. They moved around each other with an effortless ease, a well-oiled machine of culinary collaboration. It was undeniable; they made a truly great team.

The menu for the evening was an ambitious one: a creamy mushroom risotto, the aforementioned saltimbocca, a dish I didn't quite understand but trusted Ace implicitly with, and a vibrant vegetable medley. The combined aromas conjured images of a charming, rustic restaurant nestled deep within the Italian countryside.

Outside, the golden rays of the setting sun were rapidly fading, surrendering to the encroaching twilight. Ace’s red-eye flight was just five hours away, casting a bittersweet cloud over the evening. The air was thick with that peculiar, aching tenderness that only comes when you're acutely aware of an impending farewell.

Meanwhile, Jess, ever the helpful friend, was perched on the couch, cross-legged, my old phone connected to her laptop. She was diligently assisting me in the tedious task of transferring files to my new device. “Why are you still carrying both?” she had inquired earlier with a curious eyebrow raised. When I explained that there were irreplaceable memories and essential data I couldn't part with, she simply nodded understandingly and offered her technical prowess.

A sharp white window, a digital gateway to my past, suddenly materialized on her screen. “The messages folder,” I instructed, my voice a little tight. In an instant, three distinct photographs appeared, silent relics of a time gone by. Jess, with an innocent click, opened the first.

My breath hitched, a sudden, sharp intake of air. Even pixelated, that face possessed a potent gravity, a magnetic pull I was utterly unprepared for.

“Who is this?” Jess murmured, her head tilted, studying the image intently. “He looks a lot like Bastien.”

On the larger screen of her laptop, Dean’s emerald green eyes shimmered with that characteristic spark, the way they always did when he smiled. A wave of poignant nostalgia washed over me as I vividly recollected how much I used to smile when Dean was by my side. The photograph captured us on a sun-drenched dock, clad in our track uniforms, frozen in a moment that now felt impossibly distant, what seemed a lifetime and a world away.

“That’s Dean…” I managed, the name feeling foreign on my tongue after so long. “And he does.”

“You two seem really close,” Jess observed, her voice light, tinged with amusement. “I didn’t know you ran track. You’re both so cute in your uniforms.”

“He’s my best friend,” I stated, but the words felt hollow, inadequate to convey the depth of our bond.

“I’d love to meet him,” Jess mused, her gaze still fixed on the image. “It’d be wild seeing him and Bastien in the same room, like two peas in a pod.”

“You can’t…” The words caught in my throat, a painful constriction. I swallowed hard, the simple truth a bitter pill. “Dean’s gone.”

Jess’s cheerful smile instantly faltered, dissolving into a look of profound sorrow. The bright curiosity in her eyes softened, replaced by a gentle, empathetic understanding. Without a word, she reached over, her arm encircling my waist, and pulled me into a comforting embrace.

“Everything okay over there?” Bastien’s voice boomed from the kitchen, oblivious to the sudden shift in atmosphere.

207 days. I had meticulously written to Dean every single one of those days, a silent outpouring of grief and remembrance, yet I hadn't dared to speak his name aloud to anyone since leaving home. Seeing his familiar face on the laptop screen, so clear and vibrant, made his absence horrifyingly real. Too real. Unbidden tears welled in my eyes, tracing warm paths down my cheeks and onto Jess's arm.

“All good, Bastien! Just keep working on the food. I’m starving!” I called back, my voice deliberately loud, hoping to convey a sense of normalcy to the kitchen. Then, softer, my voice thick with emotion, I whispered to Jess, “I miss him every day. I’m not sure it’ll ever stop.”
