TOKYO LEGENDS

Chapter 5 (2/2): Potential

Chapter 5 (2/2): Potential

Mar 06, 2026

“The Test of Legends”

Soundscape:

[Crowd murmurs. Metallic doors opening. The faint echo of boots striking steel floors.]

The Nova Arena was a monument to ambition — a colossal domed structure of glass and alloy, stretching high above the island’s skyline.
Sunlight filtered through the transparent ceiling, scattering across the polished floor like rippling water.

Rows upon rows of first-year students filled the stands, their uniforms a sea of blue and white. Class 1 through 3 were seated in designated zones, buzzing with excitement, nervous laughter, and whispers of speculation.

At the center — a vast, open stage of silver flooring surrounded by holographic barriers — stood Class Zero.

Kasane stood among them, arms crossed, eyes scanning the massive chamber. Her heartbeat was steady, but her thoughts weren’t.

Kasane (monologue):
“All these eyes... on us.”
“No escape now.”

The faint hum of the barrier grid pulsed beneath their feet — the sound of containment fields activating. A deep blue light rose around the perimeter, trapping the arena in a shimmering wall of energy.

👑 The Chancellor’s Entrance

From the elevated platform, Chancellor Reina appeared — her crimson cloak trailing behind her like flowing silk. The crowd quieted instantly.
Beside her stood the six elite instructors — the Scarlet Commanders: Akira, Mizuki, Ryo, Saya, Aira, and Daichi.

Their presence alone carried authority.
Each had the posture of veterans who’d seen war — but it was Akira, hands in pockets and shades reflecting the light, who drew the most attention from upper-year students.

Reina:
“Students of Nova Academy — welcome to the beginning of your journey to become Scarlet Guardians.”

Her voice resonated through the loudspeakers, calm but commanding.

Reina:
“You were chosen because you hold potential — the spark to wield Divine energy, to protect this city, and to honor the crystals that sustain our world. To protect those who are unable to sense, see, and fight back the corrupt. But power means nothing without discipline. Without unity.”

She gestured toward the group standing below.

Reina:
“That is why, today, we will witness a demonstration of what defines the next generation. Class Zero — step forward.”

The students murmured as the spotlight dropped on Kasane and her classmates.

Reina:
“While Classes One through Three will observe, Class Zero will perform. This exercise will measure instinct, adaptability, and courage. Class One through Three will follow after”

⚔️ The Rules of the Trial

Ryo, the combat instructor, stepped forward and projected a holographic interface showing the match layout.

Ryo: “This will be a free-for-all. Every member of Class Zero against each other. No Divine amplification — only your base instincts and technique.”

Daichi: “You’ll use standard-issue training weapons — non-lethal, plastic-coated, and designed to simulate real combat weight.”

Saya: “Your objective is to remain standing until time runs out. The last one active when the timer reaches zero earns your team the highest evaluation.”

Kasane felt her grip tighten as assistants brought out racks of weapons — swords, daggers, gunbai, staffs, gauntlets, rifles.
Each one a dull-gray training variant of the real thing.

⚙️ Preparation

Students moved toward the racks, grabbing what felt familiar. Chase spun a practice sword with a grin.

Chase: “Heh. Not bad. Feels close enough to the real deal.”

Riku flipped a pair of training daggers.

Riku: “Weight’s off. But it’ll do.”

Krystal slung a modified gunbai weapon over her shoulder — the same model as her actual gunbai.

Krystal: “They really want us to fight each other on day one?”
Riku: “I guess their way of saying…Welcome to Nova Academy.”

Kasane knelt near the rack, scanning for her weapon — her eyes flicking past spears, maces, rifles...
But no katana.

Her heart sank slightly.

Kasane (monologue):
“Seriously… no katana?”

Her hands hovered uncertainly before settling on a large broadsword — heavier than she was used to, its hilt rough in her grip.

Kasane (monologue):
“I guess…This’ll have to do.”

Chase noticed, raising an eyebrow at Kasane.

Chase: “Hm, Didn’t peg you for a heavy blade type.”
Kasane: “…I’m not.”
Chase: “Guess today’s the day you improvise.”
He grinned.

Kasane gave a short nod — but her expression stayed serious. Her nerves showed in the small tremor of her left hand.
Krystal, watching from the corner of her eye, offered a reassuring smile.

Krystal: “You’ll be fine. Just do what you always do — stay calm.”
Kasane: softly “Right.”

🎤 The Chancellor’s Speech

Reina raised a hand — the murmurs stopped.

Reina:
“This is the path you’ve chosen. The path of Guardians. Every one of you will face doubt, fear, and loss. But strength is not measured in victories — it’s measured in how many times you stand back up.”

The wind stirred across the arena floor, carrying cherry blossom petals from the skylight above.

Reina:
“Class Zero — show us your resolve.”

The entire dome vibrated as the countdown timer ignited above them:

[60 SECONDS UNTIL START]

Students shifted into stance. Chase cracked his neck. Riku adjusted his grip. Krystal took a slow breath.
Kasane closed her eyes.

Kasane (monologue):
“Mom. Dad. Watch me.”

⚡ The Moment Before Battle

The six instructors stepped back, their silhouettes outlined by blue light. Akira stood apart from the others, arms crossed, smirk hidden behind his sunglasses.

Akira (quietly, to himself):
“Let’s see what you’ve got, Zero.”

As the final seconds counted down, the crowd leaned forward, the air electric with anticipation.
Kasane’s grip tightened around the blade’s hilt — too heavy, awkward, but steady.

The timer hit zero.

Reina: “Begin!”

The arena erupted.

Blades clashed, energy flared, shouts echoed. Class Zero’s trial had begun.

Kasane darted to the side, narrowly blocking a swing from Chase. The impact jolted her arm — the heavy blade unbalanced her stance.

Kasane (monologue):
“Tch—too heavy.”

Riku lunged in from behind; Kasane barely dodged, sliding across the steel floor, her hair whipping through the air.
The roar of the crowd grew louder as the holographic scoreboard lit up.

High above, Akira adjusted his shades, a faint grin curving his lips.

Akira: “Yeah... this is gonna be fun.”

Fade out as the battle rages — energy, noise, motion — the dawn of Tokyo’s newest legends.
