The morning’s chaos was cut short by the ringing of the bell. The classroom settled into a tense, artificial silence as the teacher walked in, scribbling the day’s topic on the board.
“Math class. What was our last topic?”
Ewo-Wun, the Class President, answered immediately. Jhenna watched him from the back of the room. He was the son of a high-ranking politician running for President—the number two power in the school. He had been watching Jhenna’s war with Jo-Anna with a quiet, growing fascination, though he hadn’t made his move yet.
At the very back sat Kang Min-Jae. The "King." He was sleeping, his head buried in his arms, his presence so heavy that even the teacher didn't dare wake him.
The class proceeded in a blur of numbers and formulas, but Jhenna wasn't focused on math. She was focused on the weight of the blazer still draped over her shoulders. It smelled of expensive cedar and Seo-Jun’s arrogance.
By lunch, the whispers had mutated. The halls of Haneul High carried a new kind of fear.
“She has Seo-Jun on her side.”
“Since when does he protect anyone?”
Seo-Jun caught the murmurs as he walked. For the first time, he wasn't looking for his friends or his fans. He was looking for a scholarship student who didn't even want his help.
He found her in the same spot: a quiet corner of the cafeteria, an untouched tray before her, her nose buried in a book. He sat down opposite her, the chair screeching against the floor.
“You’re surprisingly hard to find,” Seo-Jun remarked, leaning back.
Jhenna didn’t look up. It was as if he were made of glass.
“You’re not even going to thank me?” he asked, his tone halfway between amused and annoyed.
“Did I ask for your help?” Jhenna’s reply was cold. Precise.
Seo-Jun blinked, letting out a dry, disbelieving laugh. “Wow. You’re unbelievable.”
Jhenna finally turned a page. “You helped because you wanted to feel like a hero,” she said quietly. “Not because I needed a savior.”
That hit him. Seo-Jun opened his mouth to argue, but the words died in his throat. He realized he was being studied. Not played with, not flirted with—but analyzed.
“You really don’t care about the social ladder here, do you?” he asked, his voice losing its playful edge.
Jhenna looked up. For a split second, the mask of the "Outcast" slipped, revealing the "Director" underneath. “I do care, Seo-Jun. But not about the things you think matter.”
She stood up, gathering her things.
“Wait—where are you going?” Seo-Jun asked, looking genuinely confused.
“Somewhere quiet,” she said, her footsteps steady as she walked away.
Leaving him behind. Again.
Seo-Jun didn’t laugh this time. He sat there, a strange, heavy weight pressing into his chest. He didn't recognize the feeling. It wasn't just curiosity anymore. It was the beginning of an obsession.
LATE EVENING
Across the city, in a small, roadside shop, Jhenna sat alone. The steam from a bowl of pork hot pot clouded her vision. She picked up a piece of pork with her chopsticks, chewing slowly as her phone buzzed on the table.
Unknown Number: You shouldn’t get involved in things that don’t concern you.
It was Jhenna’s first move. She had obtained his number easily—power always leaves a trail.
Seo-Jun’s reply was instant.
Seo-Jun: Too late.
Jhenna’s fingers flew across the screen.
Jhenna: Then don’t regret it.
In his massive bedroom, Seo-Jun sat up straight, staring at the screen. He smirked, his heart racing in a way no girl had ever made it race before.
Seo-Jun: You sound like a warning.
He waited. Five minutes. Ten. Finally, the reply came.
Jhenna: I am.
Jhenna set her phone aside and sighed, a long, exhausted sound that disappeared into the steam of her meal. She knew Jo-Anna was a cornered predator, and cornered predators were dangerous. If Jo-Anna’s parents intervened, Jhenna’s scholarship would be dust.
She needed a shield. She needed a ladder. She needed Seo-Jun to be so addicted to the "warning" that he would burn the school down to protect her.
She swallowed the last of her meal and looked out at the Seoul skyline.
“Complete,” she whispered.
