Here we are once again. His deep blue eyes meeting my dark brown ones for what feels like the millionth time, yet it might just as well be the first. With nothing but the edge of the glass preventing our heat from mixing.
Sweat tickled down my palm as my skin pressed against the cool surface of the mirror, another droplet to join the puddle of the abyss, lost to the body as my mind drowned in the deep blue scales that covered him with such elegant grace.
No malice was held in our gaze, only understanding under the dark moonless sky that filled the silence.
I opened my mouth, the words crumbling on my tongue yet nothing made it past my lips as if the void swallowed my questions into itself.
My hand slid down the looking glass, helplessness making my body feel heavier than it ever had been. When a soft sniffle made my breath hitch in my throat. A sound that cut through the suffocating silence like a knife sliding through butter.
As if on cue, both my eyes and his followed the soft noise down to a little girl. Her brown eyes red and puffy as soft tears rolled down her cheeks, her dark hair a crumbled mess stuck to her skin while soft sobs racked through the child's body.
A familiar feeling itched in my veins at the sight of her face. A face that matched my own. I felt my fingers twitch and my hand slowly moved, tracing idly over the thick scars that covered my chest.
I dropped to my knees, my level meeting hers as a lump formed in my throat.
"If only you knew how strong we turned out to be..." I whispered, moving a stray hair behind her ear.
The dragon looked on from beyond the mirror, his gaze unchanging.
I felt that familiar pull on my body, and before I could register what was happening, I had opened my eyes, my alarm blaring beside my head. My fingers curled around the edge of the blanket as its weight brought me back to reality. Another glimpse, another dream. And still, I carried both of them with me.
