“Okay, I’m free so tell. Me. Everything. How are the others? Please tell me you like them? God, please tell me no one’s set out to scare you away just yet.” Marisol had finally found some time to chat and Milo had to sneak away from his coworkers in order to get some peace. They had back to back calls that afternoon and Milo needed a time out. Away from one in particular, but the rest were grating on the nerves as well at this point. Besides, they hadn't been needed for the majority of the calls anyway, as they're the Magical Emergency Services.
There weren't actually that many.
It's not as if it's all bad. Sure, no one was hexed or bitten by a vampire- but they did get a chance to magically heal a man's broken nose. Milo counted that as a win. Not for the man. But he was fine now.
Hopefully.
“It’s been okay.” Milo whispered into their phone, eyes flicking down the corridor. “Nobody’s scaring me away. I don’t see much of them anyway. Either I’m at work or they are.”
“Why are we whispering?” Marisol whispered back to them. Milo rolled their eyes.
“I’m trying to keep low at work before Tobias makes me restock random shit even though it’s already stocked and I’m fairly certain that he keeps taking items out of it to make me sound crazy.”
“You do sound crazy.” Marisol continued, voice still in a low whisper. They watched as Marisol looked off screen a few times, and they quickly realized that she was mocking them.
“Oh, fuck off.”
“PRICE!” Tobias’ voice rang out through the small station. The downside of working for the smallest medical team Milo had ever seen. The smallest team equaled the smallest station.
Located under fire station 12, the Magical Emergency Services Station (People didn't typically include the station portion, but MESS was more fun and Milo would argue a more accurate description) was home to 5 individuals: Milo Price, Tobias Sinclair, Captain Aria Fowler, Aiden Fowler, and Brixley Conolly.
As much as Captain fowler tried, the hiring advertisements did not seem to draw a crowd.
“Do you think if I die he’ll leave me alone?”
“He’d probably drag you out of hell himself.” Marisol laughed. “You’re too short staffed.” That, Milo laughed at.
“Do you think he has that kind of authorization?” They asked.
“He does.” Tobias’ voice came through the door of the storage closet and Milo grimaced. The door opened, and Tobias frowned down at them from where they were sitting in a pile of cleaning supplies. They smiled up at him, lips drawn tight.
“Yes, Tobias? How can I help? As you can see I’m quite busy.” They gestured to the space around them and Tobias raised one eyebrow in response.
“You know, if you needed a 10 you could have just told me.”
“Can I take a 10?” Milo groaned and Tobias laughed. Like, actually laughed and it took Milo by surprise. Tobias didn’t laugh.
Well, not with Milo he didn’t. With Aiden and Brixley and even Captain Fowler, sure. All the time. But with Milo?
Laughing at them was the more likely candidate but hey, Milo was taking what they could get. Progress. They reached for the crescent instinctively, fiddling with the charm through their uniform.
“Is that a yes?” Milo grinned up at him, Marisol still on the phone and Milo knew she could see their faces from the angle they had let it sit at. Tobias’ face shifted, eyes flashing black and wincing before his lips fell into a frown, eyebrows scrunching up as he pushed himself off of the doorframe.
“Get up. We have a call.” Milo fought to keep up. One minute, he was laughing, acting almost like he liked Milo, then the next it was this.
“I didn’t hear the alarms.”
“Mortal cap called in for backup. Something about a witch’s shop on fire. Something about a weasel? I don’t know, come on.” If Tobias didn’t look like Milo had threatened to kick his puppy, Milo might have laughed at calling the fire captain “Mortal Cap”. Instead, they brushed themself off, pushing off the ground.
“I’ll call you later, Marisol.”
“Bye, Milo. Bye, Tobias!" They heard the sound of kisses being blown at the screen as they hung up.
They shoved their phone into their pocket, eyes meeting Tobias’.
“Next time,” He sighed, “Just tell me you need a minute. I don’t bite.” Milo followed him down the corridor where Captain Fowler and Aiden stood, waiting. Captain Fowler gave them a look.
“About damn time!” Aiden piped in, only to receive the same look from his mother. If he noticed, his grin didn’t falter. Both Aiden and Captain Fowler were Avian, large wings sprouting from their backs. Aiden’s were smaller, tucked in behind his back while Cap’s were stretched out, an 8 foot wingspan looming over us. “What took y’all so long? That weasel could be gravely injured.”
“Enough, Aiden.” Aiden rolled his eyes, resulting in a wing wrapping around him, shoving him forward. Gently, may Milo add, despite Aiden’s reaction. One might think she flew him across the room. Aiden was the youngest and the newest of the medics and had started just over a month ago. He was doing fine, though Captain Fowler looked as if she regretted ever letting him join the team. Sometimes.
It was either Aiden or an even shorter staffed crew.
Other times it was fine. He did his job and he did it well enough for someone just starting out.
Now was not one of the formerly mentioned times. “Hey! You wouldn’t have done that to Milo, Brix or Tobi-”
“Cause we did nothing wrong” Tobias grinned, going to stand next to him, an arm swung over his shoulders. “Eh, can’t say the same for Milo.” He nodded in their direction and they felt their cheeks flame. His smile didn’t falter in the slightest. Great.
“Are you ready?” Captain Fowler sighed, holding out her arms. “Supply check?” Tobias grasped the bag over his shoulder, giving it a little shake. Captain Fowler nodded.
“Great. Fantastic.” She clasped her hands together and the floor shook. Milo had assumed an earthquake on their first day but no, instead, an ambulance shimmered and appeared slowly before solidifying in front of them. The team quickly gathered inside, Captain Fowler and Aiden in the back, Tobias at the wheel, and Milo as passenger. As soon as the back doors slammed shut, Tobias hit the circular button on the dash, the siren rang out and then they were gone.
