When we woke up the next morning, I decided to ask the other crews if we should go down to Ffarquhar, and they agreed. Percy was very excited, as he might be able to find Thomas and Toby. Because of this, he was eager to go, but I told him to settle down, as he might burst his safety valve which we really don't need happening. Once everyone was ready, we set off on our journey to Elsbridge.
We decided to take the branch line to get there and when we got to Dryaw, the airfield was completely demolished. Along with that, we saw a certain white helicopter in the middle of one of the many fires. Percy broke down at the remains, which I honestly can't blame. There goes Percy's sanity being in check I suppose. We didn't stick around for too long to keep Percy from breaking down even more, so we got out of there.
Luckily there were no other tragedies along the rest of the trip. All there was to report were blown up houses and such. When we pulled into Elsbridge, good grief it was awful. The whole goods shed was on fire! Edward told us that when he was here, it was fine, so it must've gotten bombed not too long ago. We were planning on leaving Donald and Edward in the goods shed while Percy and Duck go up the branch, but since the goods shed was on fire, they would have to come with us; luckily, Edward and Donald are just under the max weight the branch lines' bridges can hold, so we should be fine.
As we made our way down the branch, it was nothing but blown-up houses and fields engulfed in flames. I just hope Thomas or Toby are down here, otherwise I have no idea what will happen to Percy.
We passed through Maithwate, and luckily the station was still intact. This thankfully gave Percy some hope that the branch might've been spared past this point, but I doubted it. I didn't tell him this of course to keep his mentality straight.
Shockingly, the rest of the branch looked basically untouched. I was blown away how this whole area had made it out unscathed. We made a quick stop at Terence's field, and we found the tractor alive! Percy was so relieved, and I was happy to see him so excited! Greg was also happy for Percy. We told Terence that he should try and make it to the Mainland and he agreed. We parted ways and continued on our way.
We passed through Hackenbeck which had also made it out before we went on the final stretch to Ffarquhar. When we pulled into Ffarquhar, I was dumbfounded; the whole yard, station, and town was still standing!? I have no idea how all this is still standing but I'm not complaining. We decided to rest in the yard for a little while since we had come here all the way from Knapford. For some reason, there was a line of coal trucks in the carriage shed, so we had to move them. I accidentally pulled Percy's regulator too far open, and we shot forward much too fast! I applied the brakes, but it was too late. We smashed into the trucks very hard, causing Percy to get another scratch on his face, so that's just great. After that, while taking a quick search around the yard, we found Henrietta! She's praying Toby is alright, as are we. Percy was tired but still on a mission to find his closest friends. We brought Henrietta back to the sheds, and I decided to talk with the other crews. Eventually, they agreed that while they stay here, we could go to the quarry to check for Toby and Mavis. We said our goodbyes before we set off light engine for the quarry.
Well, there goes Percy's sanity. When we pulled into the quarry, the whole place had been destroyed; what was even worse was what we found in the back of the quarry. We found both Mavis and Toby's remains. Mavis had been blown up after smashing into a line of trucks, while Toby was still on fire. Seemed he didn't have enough time to run; I'm guessing he came here early in the morning to collect a train of stone when the place got bombed.
Percy started freaking out like I've never seen. I tried to calm him down, but he told me to shut the hell up. I decided not to say anything because I knew it would only make things worse. Greg just stood there in silence, I feel really bad for the guy.
During Percy's moment, we suddenly heard a bunch of explosions coming from Ffarquhar, and we all realized what was going on. Percy still in tears yelled at me to reverse now! I threw open the regulator in reverse, and we took off out of the quarry.
As we raced backwards, I could see several helicopters in the distance leaving the scene, and I only feared the worst. We pulled into the yard and I couldn't describe it; everything that had still been standing not even an hour ago was now reduced to flames. We noticed everyone was gone, and we all just stood in silence as the air around us grew hotter and hotter. Just then, I heard the sound of soft crying, and I knew exactly who it was. I hopped out of the cab, and Greg followed. We walked in front of our engine, and I had never seen him so broken. We both just looked at his face, and I don't think I've ever seen him cry this much before.
I tried to tell him that we'll find the others, but he told me to just leave him here to be burnt alive. I didn't listen and I hopped back into the cab. Once Greg hopped in, I released the brakes, and we slowly backed out of the yard.
We went to rest in Daisy's shed at Hackenbeck, and I couldn't sleep as I could only listen to Percy crying all night long. I swear I'm going to have a fit when we find the others after what they've done to my engine. I honestly don't know if we'll be able to make it through the rest of this after today.
