Wings of Fate

Chapter 1: The Peace before the Storm

Chapter 1: The Peace before the Storm

May 20, 2026

The wind was soft that evening — warm, golden, and filled with the scent of blooming lilies that clung to the edges of the small hill town. The sun had begun its slow descent, turning the rooftops into sheets of copper and bathing the quiet streets in its final light.

Janus walked home along the narrow path that wound through the fields. The blades of grass brushed against his hands, and somewhere beyond the tall fences, the laughter of children drifted through the air like the memory of simpler times.

He always loved this hour — the moment when the world seemed to hold its breath between day and night. Nothing ever changed here, and that was exactly how he liked it.

He was just an ordinary young man, with ordinary dreams — to live peacefully with his family, to one day take over his father's small trade, and to protect the warmth that filled his home. Destiny, prophecies, and chosen ones were the kind of stories he had long outgrown.

But that day, something strange lingered in the air.

As Janus climbed the last hill before home, a flicker of color caught his eye — a glimmer of blue that danced just ahead of him. He squinted, thinking it was a trick of the light, until the figure stepped from behind the old willow tree.

A girl stood there.

She looked about his age, perhaps a little younger, dressed in simple white with a faint shimmer that reminded him of moonlight on water. Her hair was white, flowing, and pinned back by a butterfly-shaped clip that gleamed the same deep blue as the evening sky.

"Janus," she said softly, as if she had known his name all her life.

He froze. "Do I… know you?"

"Not yet." Her smile carried both warmth and mystery. "But you will."

Janus blinked, glancing behind her for anyone else. There was no one — just the swaying grass and the hum of the dying sun.

"I've been looking for you," she continued, her tone calm yet oddly heavy. "You've been chosen."

"Chosen?" Janus echoed, half laughing. "For what? The town's harvest festival?"

She shook her head slowly. "Chosen by God to bring peace to this world."

The words landed like stones in his chest. He stared at her, waiting for a laugh, a grin, a sign that this was some elaborate prank. But her eyes didn't waver. They held the stillness of a mirror, reflecting something larger than reason.

"I think you have the wrong person," he said at last. "I'm not a priest, or a soldier, or whatever kind of hero you're looking for. I'm just… me."

Grace — though she had not yet given her name — stepped closer, the faint scent of jasmine trailing after her. In her hands, she held a small pendant, silver and shaped like angelic wings. One half gleamed white; the other was faintly darkened, as though dipped in shadow.

"This," she said, lifting it toward him, "will guide you to where you need to go. It will lead you to truth — and to your purpose."

Janus took a cautious step back. "You really expect me to take that?"

"I expect you to listen." Her voice was steady, almost kind. "Even I do not know what will happen if you refuse. But Heaven's silence grows louder each day. The balance is breaking. You can still choose — before it's too late."

Janus's heart beat faster, though he couldn't say why. The evening wind seemed to thicken, carrying her words into his bones. For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then, with an uneasy sigh, he took the necklace — not out of belief, but to end the moment. "Fine. I'll take it. But I'm not promising anything."

Grace studied him for a long while, her expression unreadable. Then, softly, she said, "Even rejection is a kind of answer."

And with that, she turned and walked away, fading into the orange haze of sunset.

Janus stood alone, the pendant cold in his hand. For a fleeting second, the air shimmered — as if the very sky had exhaled — and then everything returned to silence.

When Janus arrived home, the comforting scent of beef stew greeted him before he even opened the door. His mother's laughter echoed faintly from the kitchen. His younger sister was sprawled on the rug, clutching a wooden game board, her tongue poking out in concentration. His father looked up from his papers, the tired lines of work softening into a smile.

"Welcome back, son," his father said.

Janus smiled. "Smells amazing, Mom."

"Of course it does," she said, placing a steaming bowl on the table. "Your favorite — beef stew and sweet bread. I knew you'd be starving."

He sat, feeling the warmth soak into him — the clatter of spoons, the hum of evening conversation, and the softness of belonging. Whatever that girl had said, it was nonsense. This was reality — this small, perfect moment.

Later, after dinner, Janus climbed the stairs to his room. He undressed, tossed his coat over the chair, and as he turned toward his bed, something hard pressed against his pocket.

He pulled out the pendant.

The silver wings glimmered faintly in the dim light. He turned it over, watching the faint pulse of white fade in and out — like a heartbeat.

"What am I doing?" he muttered. "She's insane. Chosen by God? Peace to the world? Probably trying to recruit me into some cult."

He shoved the necklace into the drawer beside his bed and closed it. The sound clicked through the quiet like a closing door on destiny.

Janus lay down and stared at the ceiling. The scent of stew still lingered in the air. Somewhere outside, the crickets sang. Slowly, his eyelids grew heavy.

And just before sleep claimed him, he thought he heard something faint — a flutter, like the beat of wings brushing gently against the window.
