Exalted - A Stranger in Olympus

The Letter

The Letter

May 28, 2026

Olympus stretched out from the great mountain peaks located in the very centre, the biggest of which was Mount Olympus where the largest city had been built. Most of the infrastructure had been built along the base of the mountain where the land became a little flatter. Great rivers cascaded down the mountains towards the sea, civilisation built up along their riverbanks. Mount Olympus had been conquered and claimed by Zeus himself, who had built an incredibly impressive home upon the very peak. Its large towering white columns and statues surrounded the mansion. The home of the Royal household was so large that it could be seen from the city at the foot of the mountain on a clear day.

Over time, those in good favour with Zeus had been allowed to build higher and higher upon the mountain peak, but of course never as high as the Royal family themselves, nor the buildings as awe inspiring. As the city had expanded, and more gods had been born or created, as the mortal planes of existence had rapidly grown, Zeus had quickly grown tired of managing all aspects of the existence he had claimed as his own. First he had simply installed his children into positions of power, often to the displeasure of his wife Hera. However over time, many of those children had grown disinterested in running their sections themselves, delegating their roles outside of the family. This had led to the development of the Olympus government, in as much as a government could form in a monarchy. Following this, new governmental buildings had been built up over time. Eventually someone seeking employment in Olympus could tell how well they would be paid purely by how far up the mountains they had to travel for their work.

As the late afternoon sun bore down upon the governmental buildings, all sorts and types of people could be seen rushing about. Some rushed to complete urgent work, others finally having finished and left for the day. From balconies angels and harpies could be seen chatting and taking flight as they finished for the day. There were stables located nearby where horses could be left for those who wished to take a chariot home, but griffins and hypogriffs could also often be found there, owned by those who longed for the sky. Other than the defense sections, the governmental buildings essentially closed down over night.

Through the courtyard, centaurs could be seen talking to satyrs as they left the grounds, the sounds of their hooves echoing from where they hit the marble flooring. The atmosphere at the end of the day was always lively. The excited chatter rose across the whole building as it slowly emptied. Only the Royal Guards remained still and quiet, the next change of shift not due for a while. The grandeur of the location and building completely lost on those who worked there, completely desensitised to the view. Intricate statues of the Family stared down at the civil servants, watching their every move with their lifeless eyes.

Within one of buildings Artemis stared at the report on her desk. Apparently this was an emergency that she needed to look into right this instant, not that there were a lot of details. In fact the report was painfully light on details. Her twin brother's girlfriend, Narita, had invited her on a girls night out, something she was happy to skip. The report gave her an excellent excuse to do so, the sheer lack of information could keep her busy for potentially weeks verifying everything if Artemis wanted to drag it out. However, she had skipped so many invites that even she was beginning to feel bad about it. Frankly there was a level of amazement developing that Narita kept trying, despite how obviously disinterested the twin seemed.

Artemis preferred to keep a wide berth from Apollo's girlfriends, the relationships never ended well. In fact they often ended quite tragically, and when it all went wrong she didn't want to have to deal with any of the fallout. Listening to Apollo's whining was more than she could deal with as it was. It wasn't anything personal, Narita seemed nice enough, smart and interesting. Artemis could even see them being, well not friends she didn't really have time for that, but if circumstances had been different she would have found it much easier to be friendly. It would have been much better if the other woman could have taken an interest in one of her other brothers, Heracles for example. He could be fairly sweet, could do with someone to distract him honestly. He didn't seem to be fully over thinking he was dying around the mortals he'd loved before suddenly waking up fully immortal in Olympus.

She reopened the report and quickly skimmed it again. Apparently there had been some sort of an incident in Chriyo. Someone had destroyed part of the university. Apparently many of the students and teachers were seriously injured and one person had been arrested. It summed up simply that the person who had been arrested was believed to have been sent to infiltrate the university by Dinistr with the intention of sowing discord and chaos. It stated that there had been another accomplice, but there was no information on this person. The report finished with a request for Olympus to take the arrested criminal to trial.

Artemis sighed at this, annoyed. Chriyo never handled anything themselves. Olympus had made a deal with Chriyo to have first pick on any time mages that graduated the university. Due to this deal the Fates had taken up their home in Olympus and devoted their lives to making the realm prosper. Well that was the theory, largely they seemed to do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. But to suggest as much was not the done thing. The three women known as the Fates were seemingly the time mages most blessed by the Primordials Time and Creation. Although Atropos, the oldest of the Fates, was seemingly also blessed by Destruction, once again acknowledging this was not the done thing.

Killing a mortal was incredibly easy, but killing a god was near impossible. Only those blessed by Destruction had this ability, and Atropos made it look as easy as cracking an egg. However, despite this, she was rarely included in these types of trials. No, this trial would be an even bigger headache than just dealing with the Fates. The Fates believed in judging those around them constantly, directly from the flow of time, they never actually willingly dealt with others in person. So when there was a trial that had the potential to end in an execution, they would have to call someone in from the realm of Endeta.

Endeta was a small realm, with few citizens, it was rumoured to be split into a crossroads, each point ruled by a different person. Little was known though, because Endetan's weren't overly forthcoming and no one else could enter their realm. Well, you could, but only Endetans could survive there, anyone else died as soon as they entered, mortal or god. The land and the people were all undoubtedly blessed by Destruction, they were the ultimate gods of death. This was a fact, but one that was best not thought too much about.

Artemis wondered what the seemingly illogical leaps were that marked whether someone who was blessed as such was considered good or bad. The first answer she had considered was simply the amount of death you cause, but then there were certainly those in Dinistr's army with a lower body count than Atropos. Plus she'd never known a Recreationist to even try and kill someone, so it wasn't that. Ultimately Artemis had reached the conclusion that killing wasn't what made certain people bad, it was fine to kill as long as the majority agreed that the person deserved to be killed. It didn't really matter about the mortality of the matter, just what the majority decreed. This wasn't to say that Artemis agreed with Dinistr or the Recreationists, honestly she struggled to get what they were even hoping to achieve, but she sometimes wondered if maybe there was something that caused these people to move away from mainstream society other than just being 'evil'.

Back to the matter at hand, if Chriyo was going to send a criminal to Olympus, that meant Olympus needed to contact Endeta for a potential executioner. This was a headache for two reasons, the realm of Endeta existed amongst a valley of 'dead' realms. Realms that had either been destroyed by Dinistr, or had destroyed themselves through constant wars. Although the realms did not exist within the same space, the portals that had once connected them to the Void still existed and trying to get through the areas where these places had once connected was even harder than normal. It was almost like the something that was once the realms was now trying to merge with the nothing that was the Void. Collapsing the barely understandable reality into something even more incomprehensible. Due to this, traversing to the 'safe' land at the entrance was incredibly difficult, even just sending a message took a lot of magic.

The second headache was, Endetans took over any trial they were invited to. Although they largely agreed with the 'majority', they still tended to ignore the opinions of those around them once invited. Zeus himself could declare a criminal should be executed for their crimes, but if the Death god that was sent decided they disagreed, no one could force them. You couldn't even really fight them, because it was like the very essence of the lands sided with them, hurting one could cause whole harvests to fail for seasons, droughts to occur or even devastating storms. It was said that if one was killed, the whole realm would die with them, so they were always fairly confident in throwing their weight around.

So seeing this report, Artemis knew no one was going to be finishing on time. Between this, the reports of increased Recreationist cultist activity and the current preparations for the next festival, whichever one it was. Honestly Artemis had lost track, she was fairly confident it was for Dionysus, or maybe Athena...it was definitely one of the two. Either way, there was too much to be done right now. She frowned at the report, more exactly she frowned at the note that had been on top of the report. It had said:

'Artemis, send a message to Endeta, get them to send someone over. Ideally Samil if possible, she's always pretty agreeable. Thanks in advance, appreciate the help. Leave the cultists to Apollo for now. I'm sure he's got it handled. - Athena'

Now Artemis and Apollo worked in the Department of Defense. Artemis had a managerial role during the night shift and Apollo had the same role on the day shift. So in theory, he could manage anything she could. They both had the same job afterall. However Apollo did not have the cultists handled, she wasn't completely convinced he was even aware it was a problem. Apollo was arrogant and unfocused at the best of times, but whenever he dated it was like he completely forgot he even had a job. This meant she somehow had ended up running both shifts. So she would likely have to run through everything with him again. She considered her next move, she could first focus on dealing with the Apollo issue, make sure he was actually aware of what he needed to do, and make sure he was actually doing it. Artemis knew full well that if he failed she would be the one to be blamed. However, one simply didn't ignore a request from Athena. It wasn't really a request, it was an order, the thanks was clearly just for politeness.
