Blood of the Immortals

Chapter 2 - The Territorial Rules

Chapter 2 - The Territorial Rules

May 23, 2026

During a turbulent period of territorial conflict between the Union and the Confederates, California then part of the Union had become a land of wealth and opportunity. The discovery of numerous gold mines attracted a flood of migrants, especially Europeans, who believed America was a place where ambition, ideas, and hard work could elevate them to a better life.

Beneath this bustling veneer of prosperity, however, the Himura Family maintained a secret influence. They had acquired substantial shares in various business ventures, including the Argonaut Mine, Weaverhille Mine, Auburn Ravine, and the Trinity Cooperative. Their control over these assets was kept distant and discreet, carefully shielded behind layers of corporate secrecy for both profit and safety. What no one knew was that the Himuras’ wealth was not entirely earned through legitimate means. Hidden beneath their respectable facade was a supernatural advantage, something that had kept them powerful for generations. As war loomed just on the horizon, they wouldn’t be the only local clan thriving through such dark and secret methods.

Their ancestral mansion sat on the outskirts of Hanford, a town in northern California. It was an imposing, ancient structure, prosperous, yet shrouded in mystery. On a rainy, peaceful night, a young hooded figure approached the gates. The rain fell slowly, almost in sync with the quiet rhythm of the universe itself, a subtle reminder of the immortality and power that these beings wielded. Yes, the Himuras were vampires. Unlike traditional stories, they did not need blood to survive, though it strengthened them. They fed on humans and animals sparingly never out of necessity, but as part of their clandestine family secret, operating silently and in the shadows.

As the hooded figure drew near, the gates responded without hesitation; they swung open as if enchanted, only granting access to those with permission. The figure’s face became visible, young, no older than twenty, gazing quietly at the mansion’s front garden. In a brief moment, a shadowy figure appeared above him tall, watching silently from the upper window.

This young man’s name was Husa, though he preferred to be called Himura. As he stepped inside, the majestic, vaulted doors opened automatically, led inside by the mansion’s stewards Artemus and Malcolm.

“Good day, Himura,” Artemus greeted with formal respect.

Malcolm, much quieter, nodded but said nothing; his silence was deliberate and composed. Husa acknowledged them with a slight, downward smile—almost a grin—and then offered a subtle nod. It was a sign of respect, especially to his elder brethren in the family.

Walking through the enormous staircase with measured calm, Husa murmured, “It never gets old, walking up these stairs, it really doesn’t.”

In the master bedroom, the head of the Himura family, Thorian Himura, stood watching through a large window. His expression was pensive, filled with something unsettling. When Husa arrived, his presence was enough to confirm what Thorian sensed.

“You felt it too? They’re out there…” Husa said softly, slowly removing his hood. His hair was dark red, the colour of dried blood, adding to his intimidating presence. What was most startling was the visible damage: a chunk missing from his left ear, and ears that sharpened sharply at the tips when he spoke, traits linked to his supernatural powers as a vampire.

Thorian, a far older vampire, many centuries of life behind him, rested his head slightly back, raising his jaw in a gesture of command. His long grey hair contrasted with his youthful face and flawless skin. Despite his centuries of age, he appeared no older than his mid-twenties.

Turning to face his loyal companion, Thorian’s tone was commanding. “You will be my right hand,” he declared, authoritatively.

Husa bowed slightly, respectful but steadfast. “I understand,” he replied, eyes calm and focused.

Thorian nodded sharply, moments of silence passing between them. Then he straightened. “We must inform the others,” he stated firmly. Without another word, he walked toward the open door of his chamber, Husa following close behind.

Moments later, in the main hall of the mansion, the Himura family gathered around Thorian, their leader, to discuss an urgent matter threatening their brotherhood. The atmosphere was tense but resolute. All eight members were now dressed for combat, clad in dark, form-fitting robes tailored for mobility. Their hoods, tighter than the loose ones Husa had worn earlier, barely concealed their identities. Heavy, gothic-style boots clunked heavily on the stone floor as they took their positions.

To the left of Thorian stood his loyal frontmen, Artemus and Malcolm. In the centre, two fearsome female vampires, Hemphia and Vellesca, brandished enormous swords strapped to their backs, their presence both elegant and deadly. Despite their fragile, almost delicate appearances, their terrifying smiles hinted at the ruthlessness beneath the surface, a contrast that sent a flicker of curiosity through Husa.

Husa was positioned to Thorian’s right. His hair, the only dark hue among most of the family, stood out against the others, who wore shades of brown and black. Deep in thought, he studied the scene, realising the storm they faced might become chaos.

The last two members near Husa, Ukaid and Tek, stood ready. Ukaid, the strongest of them all at nearly seven feet tall, bore a scar on his forehead, an indication of his resilience and ability to endure recoil. Tek, the shortest of the brotherhood at just under six feet, was equipped with two razor-sharp daggers at his waist. Though he hadn’t been in combat much, Husa guessed Tek’s specialisation was speed, a theory reinforced by his training with Thorian and Ukaid.

Thorian broke the silence. “As you know, we have a problem that must be dealt with.”

Vellesca, eager and fiery, immediately responded. “Then what are we waiting for? Let’s end this now.”

Malcolm, ever cautious, raised a hand to curb her urgency. “Don’t be too hasty. We don’t even know what we’re up against. If it’s another family, things could get ugly.”

“And if it is?” Artemus continued quietly, “Are we really prepared to kill them? We have rules, rules we’ve always tried to follow. But what if those rules cost us everything?”

Husa chimed in. “Even so, we can’t let whoever’s behind those murders slip away. If they’re getting bold enough to attack, it will only come back to bite us. Besides, this is our home and exposing ourselves could ruin everything.”

Hemphia, clearly intrigued by the young vampire’s words, smirked. “Who would’ve thought our youngest would speak with such intelligence?”

Thorian stepped forward sharply. “I’ve heard enough. You’re all right, Malcolm. We can’t afford to be reckless. This time, we stick together. No lone wolves.”

After a decisive look at Husa, Thorian’s gaze hardened. The others nodded in acknowledgment. Thorian then placed a steady hand on Hemphia’s shoulder, his second-in-command, reinforcing their unity.

“We’ll approach this carefully together. And I will decide what’s best once I know more,” Thorian said.

“Agreed,” Malcolm replied softly.

Husa nodded, accepting Thorian’s order and the group’s unity. As the brotherhood meeting drew to a close, Hemphia looked up at their commanding leader, a faint blush crossing her face, though she quickly returned to her formal composure. Thorian and Hemphia led the way out of the hall, with the others prepared to face whatever threat lay ahead.

The Himura family appears respectable on the surface—mine owners, investors, pillars of Hanford—but beneath the mansion’s opulence they hide a far older power. Husa, the young and gifted Himura, returns to the ancestral home and stands before Thorian and the family as tensions rise: mysterious killings, uneasy omens, and a secret the clan must protect. As the Himuras slip on combat robes and sharpen their resolve, loyalty, secrecy, and ancient strength prepare them for a danger that will force the shadows into the open.
