The written alphabet around the edge of the circles is called ogham. It was invented very late in the celtic history of Ireland. It was amongst other things used to be chiseled into the edge around a flat stone. Before ogham the Celts had no written language. The theory is that it might have been inspired by the runes of the vikings or the roman alphabet spreading with christianity.
