The Cheating's Mutual

Chapter 15: Minor Changes

Chapter 15: Minor Changes

Jul 07, 2026

Brennen noticed Dorian first.

Hard not to — the stands were empty except for him, sitting in the third row with a bag at his feet like he'd simply arrived somewhere and sat down in it. Unhurried. Unbothered. The kind of stillness that Brennen had always found slightly unreadable about the guy.

He filed it away. Yris's boyfriend, waiting for practice to end. Normal enough.

He jogged back into the drill.

The session was a good one. Coach had them running combination plays they'd been working on for two weeks and it was finally clicking — the timing, the spacing, the instinctive read of where your teammate was going to be before they got there. Brennen lived for this part. The part where it stopped feeling like effort and started feeling like language.

He was midway through a passing sequence when he glanced toward the stands again out of habit.

And stopped.

Qinny was there.

Sitting one seat away from Dorian, bag in her lap, already talking about something with the easy body language of someone who had been there a while.

Brennen blinked.

Then felt something warm move through his chest.

She came.

He hadn't asked her to — hadn't expected her to. Qinny had a long-standing and vocal opinion about football that involved the phrase prolonged excuse for men to run into each other emotionally, and she had never once shown up to a practice unprompted in six years.

And yet here she was.

He grinned to himself and got back into the drill.

Water break.

Players dispersing toward the sidelines, breathing hard, reaching for bottles.

Brennen jogged toward the near side and found the stands immediately and caught Qinny's eye. He waved. She smiled back and waved, warm and easy, and he felt the same stupid warmth from earlier.

And then his eyes moved.

One seat to the left.

Dorian was eating a cracker.

Brennen's gaze moved back to Qinny. Then to the space between them — the cracker packet sitting there, the easy angle of their conversation, the particular comfort of two people who had stopped being careful around each other.

He thought about what he'd seen from the field before the water break.

Qinny laughing — not the polite one, not the social one. The real one. Open and unguarded, the kind she gave when she forgot she was being watched.

And Dorian beside her with an expression Brennen couldn't quite read from this distance but that had made something in his chest do something he didn't have a name for yet.

He kept the smile on his face.

Looked away.

Got back to it.

The second half of practice ran clean. Brennen played well. He always played well when he needed something to focus on.

By the time Coach blew the final whistle he'd mostly talked himself out of whatever that feeling had been. Qinny was friendly — she'd always been friendly, that was just who she was. And Dorian was Yris's boyfriend, which meant the entire thing was nothing.

Less than nothing.

He jogged over to the stands.

"You finally came," he said, dropping into the easy warmth he always had with her after a good session.

"Yeah, I wanted to surprise you." Qinny smiled up at him.

He felt it again — that warmth. Genuine. Simple.

Then he looked at Dorian.

"Hey man."

"Hey," Dorian said. Calm. Unremarkable. The specific energy of someone with nothing to explain and no interest in explaining it.

"You two were talking?" Brennen asked. Light. Friendly. The tone of someone making conversation.

"We've met before," Qinny said easily. "First day of lecture. You introduced us, remember?"

"Oh right, yeah." He nodded. Smiled. "Cool."

One beat longer than necessary.

Then Yris appeared from the far end of the pitch, sliding her hand into Dorian's arm the way she always did. Brennen watched her clock Qinny — a fraction of a second, completely controlled — before her expression settled back into its usual warmth.

"Good session?" she asked, looking at Brennen.

"Good session," he confirmed.

Four people. Late afternoon sun. Two couples.

Completely normal.

Absolutely nothing to explain.

Brennen put his arm around Qinny's shoulders.

"Ready?" he said.

"Yeah," she said.

He didn't look back at Dorian.

Didn't need to.

The drive back was quiet.

Not uncomfortable — just quiet. The radio hummed low. The city moved past the windows. Qinny sat beside him looking out at the streets the way she sometimes did when she was thinking about something she hadn't decided to share yet.

He reached over at a red light and took her hand.

She squeezed back automatically.

Warm. Familiar.

And somehow that should've been enough.

Brennen kept his eyes on the road.

The thing he couldn't shake — the thing he kept turning over — wasn't the talking. People talked. That was normal. It wasn't even the crackers or the easy body language or the fact that Dorian had apparently been sitting in those stands long enough to produce snacks.

It was the laugh.

That specific laugh. Open and unguarded and completely unselfconscious. The one she gave when she forgot someone was watching.

He knew that laugh. He'd been on the receiving end of it for six years.

And today, for the first time, he'd watched it happen from thirty meters away.

Directed at someone else.

None of it looked romantic.

That was almost the problem.

It looked natural. The kind of natural that didn't come from one combined lecture and a handful of accidental encounters.

"You're quiet," Qinny said.

He blinked back. "Oh, sorry, I was just lost in thought."

"About what?"

"Nothing important, really." He glanced at her. "You okay lately?"

It came out softer than he meant.

She looked slightly surprised. "Yeah? Why are you asking like something's wrong."

"No reason. Just checking."

She watched him for a second. Then squeezed his hand once.

"I'm okay," she said simply.

He nodded.

Maybe that should've settled it.

After he dropped her off, Brennen sat in the parked car longer than he needed to.

The car still smelled faintly like her perfume.

He leaned his head back and stared at the ceiling.

The thing was — Qinny had never been hard to read. Not to him. Six years of knowing someone built a particular fluency. He knew when her laugh was real versus polite, when her quiet meant tired versus upset, when she was genuinely fine versus performing fine.

He knew all of it.

Which was why today felt like reading a sentence in a language he mostly knew and hitting a word he didn't recognize.

His phone buzzed.

Yris
home!! legs are literally dead 😭

He stared at the message. Normally he'd reply immediately — something easy, something teasing. Instead his thumb hovered.

Brennen
stretch properly or you'll regret it tomorrow

Yris
wah since when are you the responsible one 🤨

Yris
also can I say something

Brennen
go ahead

Yris
okay don't take this the wrong way

Yris
but Dorian and your girlfriend seemed pretty close today

Yris
like more than I'd expect for people who barely knew each other

Yris
just saying 👀

Brennen read it twice.

Brennen
well they do go to the same lecture right

Yris
I know that

Yris
I just mean the vibe was a bit

Yris
idk comfortable?

Yris
but its probably nothing lol

Brennen
yeah probably nothing

He locked the phone before she could reply.

Sat in the quiet.

Probably nothing.

He thought about it for awhile.

And then he thought about the fact that it was Yris saying it.

Yris.

Who had spent the last several weeks going out with the girls, cancelling plans last minute, being perfectly warm and perfectly present whenever he saw her.

Yris, who was now texting him about how comfortable his girlfriend looked with her boyfriend.

Something settled heavily in his chest.

Not quite irony.

Closer to the specific discomfort of recognizing something in someone else that you'd been carefully not looking at in yourself.

He started the engine.

Drove home.

And didn't let himself finish the thought.

Across the city, Yris sat on her bed staring at her phone.

Brennen's reply sat there. Three words. No punctuation.

"Yeah probably nothing."

She put the phone down.

Picked it up again.

The thing was — it probably was nothing. They'd met in a lecture. They'd ended up near each other at practice. People talked. That was just how people worked.

Dorian especially — he wasn't charming on purpose. He wasn't charming at all, really, not in the conventional sense. He was just present. Quiet. Paying attention in a way that most people didn't bother to.

So it was nothing.

Probably.

She pulled her knees to her chest.

The image came back anyway.

Qinny laughing — easy and open and completely unselfconscious. And Dorian beside her with that expression. That specific unguarded almost-smile that Yris had spent eight months trying to earn.

She'd seen it from thirty meters away.

Directed at someone else.

Yris opened Instagram.

Scrolled without seeing anything.

It was nothing, she told herself.

It was fine.

She just needed to stop thinking about it.

Which she was absolutely not doing.

At all.
