Am I Alone?

Chapter 05 : The Lonely Dance

Chapter 05 : The Lonely Dance

Jun 09, 2026

Six months have passed since that night on the rooftop, and Min-jae and I have become experts at the dance of almost.

Almost touching when we pass each other in the hallways. Almost meeting each other's eyes during lunch. Almost speaking the words that hover just beneath the surface of every conversation.

We're still friends but only technically. We still sit together, still walk to classes in loose formation with Woo-sung chattering between us like a bridge over troubled water. But there's a careful choreography to it now, a measured distance that feels both protective and suffocating.

Most days, I can pretend it's enough.

Today is not one of those days.

It starts during art class, when we're paired for a joint project something about interpreting emotions through color and form. The teacher, oblivious to the tension that crackles between us like static electricity, assigns us to work together on a piece about "friendship and connection."

The irony isn't lost on either of us.

"So," Min-jae says, settling onto the stool beside me. Close enough that I can smell his familiar scent soap and pencil shavings and something uniquely him that makes my chest tight. "What do you think? Abstract or realistic?"

"I don't know," I mumble, fiddling with my brushes. "Whatever you want."

He's quiet for a moment, and when I glance up, he's studying my face with an intensity that makes me want to squirm.

"Ji-hoon," he says softly. "Are we ever going to talk about...(silence)"

"There's nothing to talk about," I cut him off quickly, heat rising in my cheeks. "We're fine. Everything's fine."

But it's not fine, and we both know it.

The painting we create together is a mess of conflicting colors , his warm yellows and oranges clashing with my cautious blues and grays, creating muddy browns in the spaces where they meet. It's beautiful and terrible at the same time, like everything else about us.

"It looks like a storm," Woo-sung observes when he wanders over, paint smudged on his cheek. "Or maybe a sunset. I can't tell if it's ending or beginning."

Min-jae and I look at each other across the canvas, and for a moment, the careful walls we've built threaten to crumble.

"Both, maybe," Min-jae says quietly, not looking away from me. "Sometimes they're the same thing."

The moment stretches between us, heavy with possibility, until I break eye contact first. I always break first.

Later, during lunch, Min-jae sits closer than usual. Not obviously, just a shift in his usual position that brings his knee against mine under the table. The contact sends electricity shooting up my spine, and I have to fight the urge to jerk away.

"You okay?" he asks, voice low enough that Woo-sung can't hear over his animated retelling of some student council drama.

"Yeah," I lie, hyperaware of the warmth of his leg against mine. "Just tired."

"You're always tired lately," he observes, and there's something searching in his tone. "Maybe you should get more sleep."

"Maybe you should mind your own business," I snap, immediately regretting the harshness in my voice when I see him flinch.

But instead of pulling away like I expect, like I half-want him to, Min-jae leans closer.

"I am minding my own business," he says, and his voice is so soft I have to strain to hear it. "You are my business, Ji-hoon. Whether you like it or not."

My breath catches. The cafeteria noise fades to white static around us, and for a moment, it's just him and me and the space between us that feels charged with everything we're not saying.

Then Woo-sung turns to us with bright eyes and an expectant expression, and the spell breaks.

Are you guys even listening?" he snaps. "I literally just told you the student council president got caught making out with the vice president behind the gym, and now you two are staring at each other like you're about to recreate the sequel!

"Sorry," I mutter, grabbing my milk carton and taking a long drink to avoid meeting anyone's eyes. "That's... shocking."

"Right?" Woo-sung continues, apparently satisfied with my response. "I always thought she was dating that guy from Class B. It Shows that I know about anything, does't it?"

The conversation moves on, but I can feel Min-jae's attention like a physical weight. When I finally risk a glance at him, he's still watching me with an expression I can't quite read.

After school, I'm walking toward the bike racks when Min-jae falls into step beside me. Woo-sung has student council, so it's just the two of us for the first time in weeks.

"Want to walk together?" he asks, even though our houses are in opposite directions.

I should say no. I should make up an excuse, put distance between us before this careful balance we've struck tips over into something I'm not ready for.

Instead, I nod.

We walk in relative silence through the streets near school, past the convenience store where we used to buy snacks, past the playground where we had our first real conversation about fears and dreams. The late afternoon light turns everything golden, and Min-jae looks softer in it, younger somehow.

"Remember when we first became friends?" he asks suddenly, stopping beside the swings where we used to sit during lunch breaks in our first year.

"Yeah," I say, throat tight. "You were new. Scared."

"Not scared," he corrects with a small smile. "Excited"

The way he says it makes something crack open in my chest. I know what he's really asking when did we stop believing in possibilities? When did I become so afraid of everything that I started running from the one person who made me feel brave?

"Min-jae," I start, then stop, not knowing how to finish.

"I know," he says quietly. "I know you're scared. I know I make things complicated for you just by existing. But Ji-hoon... I can't keep pretending that night never happened. I can't keep acting like I don't—"

"Don't," I whisper, panic rising in my throat. "Please don't do again"

"Why?" His voice is gentle but insistent. "What are you so afraid of?"

Everything, I want to say. I'm afraid of wanting you so much it physically hurts. I'm afraid of the way my heart races when you're near me. I'm afraid of what people would say, what my parents and society would do to us. I'm afraid of being brave enough to love you and losing you anyway.

But the words stick in my throat like they always do.

"I can't," I say instead, backing away from him. "I'm sorry, but I can't."

The hurt that flashes across his face is like a knife to my chest, but he doesn't push. He never pushes, which somehow makes it worse.

"Okay," he says simply. "I understand."

But I don't think he does. I don't think he understands that it's not about not wanting him it's about wanting him so much that it terrifies me. I don't think he knows that every careful distance I put between us is a protection not just for me, but for him too.

We walk the rest of the way in silence, the golden light fading around us. At the corner where we usually part ways, Min-jae pauses.

"Ji-hoon," he says, not looking at me. "You know I'd wait for you, right? However long it takes."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I want to turn around, want to cross the distance between us and tell him yes, tell him I'm ready, tell him all the things I've been holding back.

Instead, I keep walking.

Behind me, I hear his quiet sigh, the sound of footsteps heading in the opposite direction.

That night, lying in bed staring at the ceiling, I replay every moment of our interaction. The way he sat closer at lunch. The warmth in his voice when he said I was his business. The patient hurt in his eyes when I ran away again.

I think about the painting we made together. All those conflicting colors, the storm that could have been a sunset. I think about possibilities and the space between almost and actually.

I think about Min-jae, waiting for me in a future I'm too scared to step into.

And for the first time in months, I let myself imagine what it would feel like to be brave enough to meet him there in future.

My phone buzzes with a text. For a wild moment, I think it might be him, but it's just Woo-sung asking about homework.

I set the phone aside and close my eyes, but sleep doesn't come easily. Instead, I dream of golden light and gentle hands and a voice saying my name like it means something precious.

When I wake up, the ache in my chest feels both heavier and lighter than before.

Maybe tomorrow, I think.

Maybe tomorrow I'll be brave enough to stop running.

But tomorrow comes and goes, and I'm still the same coward I was yesterday, dancing the careful steps of almost, always almost, never quite.

The art of almost is a lonely dance, but it's the only one I know.

To be continued...
