A World Bleeding Gold: Poetry Anthology

Elderly Kids

Elderly Kids

Jun 09, 2026

Act your own age, be more mature, throw away all of your toys,

“You’re too old for them!” Is all we hear from the moment that we turn four.

Sit up straight, don’t talk back, be good and listen to all the noise,

But you don’t get to speak, you don’t get a voice, so shut up sit on the floor.

You’re too old for this, you’re too young for that, act like your twelve and not seven,

Yet when you turn twelve we’ll treat you like seven cause you’re still too young for heaven.

Look after your brother, listen to your sister, and then complete all of your chores,

Because if you don’t your not mature enough to go for a walk on the shores.

You must listen to parents and teachers and friends, and if you don’t you’ll have to pay,

Because we’ll punish you for your incompetence and its only the start of the day.

As children we’re forced back and forth, between young and between old.

We must act our age, but how do we do that, when its never been this cold.

And yet we’re expected to act above, what biology says is true,

Because science says your rules aren’t good, and that only makes us blue.

Yelling gets nowhere, school’s times are wrong, and academics aren’t all that,

Because if you sit on the couch and achieve your dreams you’ll get hit with societies bat.

As a child you’re taught its all or nothing, and that to fit in you must achieve,

The impossible expectations that are set in the sky, and there is no time to grieve.

At an early age we’re thrown words and math, then later we’re taught history,

But all we learn is societies failures, and there’s no positives in this mystery.

People don’t like this new generation, because they think we grow up too fast,

But that’s because we’re taught that adults get to last,

They get words and they get the right to say,

What they really think about this devastation, and upon this failure we lay,

Where the good are hurt and scorned, and the evil get to walk free.

So we swallow our words and get old way too fast, so we get a say in this plea.

We want words we want rights we hate your condescension,

But at the end of the day its funny you forgot to mention,

How the world has changed so much over the years,

And I’m sorry to say its not the same switch the gears.

Times have changed. Children are intelligent beings who deserve a voice, especially when the world will be handed over to them in a few years. Give them rights, Give them a voice, and most of all, Give them the chance to voice their opinion – they’re not stupid just because they’re children, and they’re not idiotic because they’re teenagers. They’re people too.

A collection of poems that lingers in the space between beauty and breaking. This anthology explores the quiet ache of growing up, the sharp edges of society, and the strange tenderness hidden inside ordinary moments. It is about the world as it is, flawed, breathtaking, overwhelming, and the people who are simply trying to survive inside it.
