The Guide of the Backrooms

Horrifying echoes of survival

Horrifying echoes of survival

Jul 13, 2026

The cool moisture of the basin slowly worked its way through David’s veins, chasing away the agonizing numbness of the heat stroke. He plunged his entire face back into the crystal-clear water, drinking deeply before splashing the icy fluid over his neck and arms. The relief was immediate. His vision stopped vibrating, and his muscles stopped locking up.
"Okay," David breathed, wiping his eyes as he pushed himself up from the concrete floor. "Time to work."
He began pacing through the dark, brutalist interior of the concrete building. The layout felt like an abandoned medical clinic fused with a tropical greenhouse. He aggressively wrenched open rows of rusted cabinets, his eyes darting through the dust. "Come on," he muttered. "Bottles. Food. Anything."
He moved deeper into the structure, crossing aThreshold into what looked like a cramped, abandoned staff bedroom. Strewn across a moldy mattress was a heavy-duty, faded green military backpack.
David snatched it up, testing the straps. "Perfect," he whispered, a grim smirk crossing his face. "At least I don't have to carry everything the hard way now."
He slung the empty bag over his shoulders. He rummaged through the bedside drawers, but found nothing but stacks of blank printer paper covered in black damp-mold.
Leaving the bedroom, he followed a heavy stench of fermentation into an adjacent wing. He stepped into a massive, structurally distorted room where the concrete floor had completely ruptured. Giant, alien vines burst from the ground, heavy with massive, pulsating purple fruit. A small pack of the hairless, smooth-faced monkey creatures were huddled over the vines, tearing into the fruit with wet, ravenous crunches.
David’s stomach let out a violent, painful growl. He gritted his teeth, his hand tightening on his makeshift weapon. "I made it this far," he muttered to himself. "Might as well eat."
The moment his boot crunched on a piece of broken tile, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the shadows of the room.
"Freeze! Don't you damn move!"
David snapped his head around. Out from behind the thick vines stepped a group of three humans. They looked like they had been trapped in the maze for years—their clothes were shredded, reinforced with duct tape and dried moss, and their skin was caked in layers of gray filth. They were aiming rusted, makeshift cross-bows and iron pipes directly at David's chest.
The leader, a gaunt man with a jagged scar running down his throat, stepped forward, his eyes burning with intense paranoia. "Who are you?!" he hissed. "Are you with them bastards?! You with the Ghost Syndicate?!"
David instantly lifted his hands in the air, his pulse spiking. "Sorry! Look, I'm just here to gather supplies! I'm trying to help my sick friend. I don't know anything about a Ghost Syndicate. I'll just be on my way."
David began to slowly take a step backward, keeping his eyes on their weapons.
"Wait!" the group leader barked, taking a step forward. "I have questions—"
Before he could finish, a loud, reality-shattering roar ripped through the concrete walls. It didn't sound like an animal; it sounded like a corrupted audio file screeching at maximum volume.
The hairless monkey creatures let out sharp, panicked shrieks, dropping the fruit and scrambling up the walls to escape through the ceiling vents.
The group leader's face turned completely pale. "Dammit!" he screamed, his voice cracking with pure terror. "Them filthy creatures found us! Get ready!"
From the high window, a massive, unnatural horror violently crashed into the room. It was an absolute nightmare of corrupted biology. It possessed the heavy, muscular body of a rabid wolf, but sprouting from its spine were giant, translucent, twitching fly wings that buzzed with a sickening vibration. Worst of all was its head—a massive, bulbous spider skull covered in clusters of bleeding black eyes, featuring a jaw that unzipped down the center to reveal rows of razor-sharp, needle-like teeth.
With a sickening burst of speed, the creature lunged. It didn't hesitate. It slammed into the two scavengers behind the leader, its spider jaw clamping down on their torsos with a horrific, wet crunch. It began violently tearing them apart, eating them alive right on the concrete floor.
Terrified, David didn't think twice. He threw himself behind a fallen concrete pillar, covering his head, unable to believe the monstrosity he was witnessing.
The group leader took one look at his shredded crew and bolted for the opposite exit, screaming in despair, "Damn it! Our food supply is cut off! Run!"
The creature lifted its bloody spider head from the remains. It let out an eerie, glitched noise—a mechanical sniffing sound, mimicking a hunting wolf despite having no nose, followed by a deafening, high-pitched insectoid screech.
David held his breath, slowly, meticulously crawling backward out of the room. But as his foot shifted, his heel accidentally knocked a rusted metal canister off a low counter.
Clang.
The metal rattled loudly against the floorboards.
The monster’s fly wings buzzed violently. It rotated on its wolf legs and instantly sprinted toward the noise at a terrifying pace.
"Shit!" David scrambled to his feet, discarding all stealth, and ran at a full sprint back toward the room with the water tree. Behind him, the heavy thudding of paws and the erratic buzzing of wings closed the distance fast.
David dove into the water room, sliding behind a massive steel filing cabinet. The creature burst into the room a second later, losing sight of him in the shadows. Frustrated, the monster hopped onto a row of wooden cabinets, its heavy claws destroying the wood instantly, tearing it to splinters. Finding nothing inside, it let out a disappointed hiss, turned, and violently dove straight out the open glass window, disappearing back into the thick jungle brush.
David collapsed against the water basin, his chest heaving as he caught his breath. Sweat and adrenaline soaked his clothes. "Got to get back to her," he gasped, his voice trembling. "Fast. Got to find water first... got to venture deeper here."
He fumbled with his new backpack, desperately soaking his ripped flannel shirt sleeves in the water basin to carry whatever moisture he could back to Lisa. Slung with the heavy, wet fabric, he cautiously slid out of the concrete building, stepping back into the sweltering, sticky jungle.
He had only walked a few hundred yards through the suffocating brush when a figure suddenly crashed through the leaves directly in front of him.
David yelled, raising his metal rod. The other person screamed, raising a rusted pipe.
They both froze. It was the group leader. He was covered in black filth and fresh blood, his breathing frantic.
The leader lowered his pipe, a twisted, desperate look of surprise crossing his gaunt face. "What a surprise... we meet again." He gripped David’s arm with a iron, shaking grip. "Let's find cover first. I have questions for you."
David opened his mouth to tell the man to get lost, but the leader instantly slapped a filthy hand over David's mouth.
"Listen," the leader whispered, his eyes widening in pure horror.
From deep within the dense, sweating woods behind them, a loud, coordinated chorus of screeching began to echo, moving closer by the second. The entities were tracking them. Both men tightly gripped the straps of their bags.
The group leader looked back at David, his face grim. "Follow me. This way."
