The Guide of the Backrooms

The Shadow of the Syndicate

The Shadow of the Syndicate

Aug 10, 2026

Garcia moved with an eerie, practiced fluidness, his boots barely making a sound against the cracked concrete as he led David back through the brutalist corridors of the facility. They checked room after room, keeping their backs pressed tightly to the walls, eyes scanning the shadows for any hint of the Chitin-Stalker.
When they rounded the final corner back into the room with the water tree, the stench of fresh iron and rot hit them instantly.
A dozen hairless, smooth-faced monkey creatures lay dead, piled haphazardly into a corner like discarded trash. In the center of the carnage, the massive wolf-spider monstrosity was hunched over, its giant translucent fly wings twitching with a sickening rhythm as its spider jaw aggressively tore into the fresh meat.
David recoiled, his pulse hammering against his ribs, but Garcia didn’t panic. He leaned in close, his breath hot against David’s ear. "We can get past silently," he whispered, pointing a filthy finger toward the far wall. "The window is open. Let's go quietly."
They dropped into a low crouch, moving inch by inch along the perimeter of the room, using the shadows of the heavy filing cabinets as a shield. Halfway across the floor, the entity suddenly stopped tearing at its prey. Its bulbous, multi-eyed spider head snapped upward, its glitched audio sniffing sound echoing loudly through the room. David and Garcia froze, paralyzed by a shared surge of pure terror. For five agonizing seconds, nobody breathed. Then, the monster dropped its head back down and resumed its ravenous eating.
Relief washed over David as they reached the sill. Garcia climbed out the open window first, slipping silently down into the thick mud below. David scrambled up behind him, a frantic thought racing through his mind: We got out safely. One goal done.
He swung his legs over the frame and began to slowly climb down the concrete exterior, but his sweat-slicked fingers lost their grip. The heavy metal rod he was using as a weapon slipped from his hand.
Clang.
The metal bar struck the concrete foundation with a deafening ring before burying itself in the mud.
Inside the room, the Chitin-Stalker let out a piercing, reality-shattering screech. The heavy, frantic thudding of its paws scrambled across the tile floor, rushing directly toward the window at a blinding speed.
"Run!" Garcia hissed.
They bolted into the dense, cloying brush of the jungle, throwing themselves behind the roots of a giant, skin-textured tree just as the monster leaped out of the window behind them. Crouching in the dark, Garcia began throwing rapid hand signals at David—clenched fists, sweeping gestures, pointed fingers.
David’s mind blanked, his terror-induced adrenaline making it impossible to process the movements. "I don't understand," David stammered in a terrified whisper.
Garcia gripped David’s shoulder firmly, pulling his face close. "To the left," he whispered sharply. "Then you lead the way, but stay exactly six inches back from me."
Before David could answer, the heavy crunching of leaves grew louder. The creature was sniffing its way toward the exact tree they were hiding between, its translucent wings buzzing a low, sickening vibration that rattled David's teeth.
Swallowing his panic, David did exactly what Garcia commanded. They began to slowly, meticulously slide around the diameter of the massive trunk, keeping the tree between themselves and the monster's blind, multi-eyed face. They were inches away from slipping back into the deep foliage when a giant, distorted jungle bug—the size of a dog, with a translucent, twitching exoskeleton—suddenly dropped from a hanging vine right in front of David's face.
The shock caught him completely off guard. A sharp, involuntary gasp escaped David's throat.
The Chitin-Stalker heard it. With a violent burst of speed, the monster lunged directly at the sound—but instead of hitting David, its massive spider jaws clamped down on the giant, distorted bug, mistaking it for the human intruder. The air filled with the sound of snapping chitin and high-pitched screeches as the monster wrestled its new prey.
"Move!" David yelled, abandoning stealth as he quickly ran past the thrashing horror. Garcia was right at his heels, his tattered clothes cutting through the sharp brush as they maneuvered blindly through the twisting network of identical trees.
They ran until their lungs burned, finally collapsing into a patch of dense ferns a safe distance away. David leaned his head against his knees, his chest heaving in ragged gasps. "It was a close one," he wheezed, wiping a layer of cold sweat and grime from his eyes. "I almost pissed myself in fear."
Garcia let out a raspy, unhinged laugh, his manic eyes gleaming in the sunless glare of the sky. "Yes, it was! Something right, huh? Heart beating straight out of the chest!" He continued to laugh quietly to himself, a sound that made David deeply uncomfortable.
Forcing himself back to his feet, David checked his bearings, recognizing the familiar, melting office partitions in the distance. "We're getting to our destination," David said, a desperate hope flaring in his chest as he thought of the water bottles in his bag. "The camp is right up ahead."
Garcia’s laughter instantly cut out. His body went rigid as he noticed the perimeter of the makeshift campsite. "Wait," Garcia muttered, his voice dropping into a deadly serious tone.
David didn't listen. His survival instincts were entirely focused on Lisa. He ran straight into the clearing, but as his boots hit the edge of the camp, he skidded to a dead stop.
The entire clearing had been completely transformed. Parked sideways across the melting office furniture was a massive, heavily armored military transport vehicle—an impossible piece of high-tech machinery that looked completely alien to the rotting jungle.
Swarming the camp were dozens of highly trained soldiers wearing pitch-black, faceless military-grade tactical gear. They carried specialized, buzzing containment nets and high-tech shock rifles, actively capturing the weird, distorted jungle insects and stuffing the screaming, hairless monkey creatures into heavy steel containment crates. They left absolutely no footprints in the mud, moving like invisible predators.
David's heart shattered into a million pieces. His eyes darted frantically toward the barricaded conference table where he had hidden Lisa. The heavy table had been tossed aside like paper.
He took a desperate step forward to scream her name, but before a single sound could escape his lips, Garcia violently lunged from the brush. He grabbed David by the collar of his shirt, dragging him backward into the dense ferns, his hand slamming firmly over David's mouth.
Garcia looked at him with a cold, terrifyingly serious expression, his fingers digging into David's skin like iron claws. David could only stare back in absolute, paralyzing fear as the faceless soldiers of the Ghost Syndicate closed in on the space where Lisa had been taken.
