Am I Alone?

Chapter 07 : The Truth Unfolds

Chapter 07 : The Truth Unfolds

Jun 13, 2026

"You want to know what's going on, Ji-hoon? Your new best friend here isn't some tragic transfer student... he is..." Min-jae's voice cracked, "the reason I transferred to this school two years ago."

My blood went cold. "What?"

Jin-seok stepped forward, hands raised like he was approaching a wounded animal. "Min-jae, it wasn't like that. You know it wasn't..."

"Wasn't like what?" Min-jae snarled. "Wasn't like you cornering me after I rejected you five time? Wasn't like your daddy's lawyers showing up at my house with threats disguised as settlements?"

The vending machine hummed loudly in the silence that followed. My drink was still pooling on the floor between us, forgotten.

"It wasn't supposed to happen," Jin-seok started, then stopped, running his hands through his hair. "Fuck. This is all wrong. This isn't how I wanted to"

"Wanted to what?" Min-jae demanded. "Wanted to bully me again? Wanted to isolate me from the only friend I've made since you destroyed my life?"

My head was spinning.

Min-jae's laugh was hollow. "Tell you what? That the reason I transferred here wasn't for a fresh start, but because I was running away from you..."

He couldn't finish the sentence. He slid down the wall until he was sitting on the floor, head in his hands.

Jin-seok moved closer, and I saw Min-jae flinch. The motion was small but unmistakable, and it made something violent and protective surge in my chest.

"Don't," I said, stepping between them. "Don't come any closer."

Jin-seok's eyes snapped to mine. "Ji-hoon, you don't understand. I've changed. I'm not the same person I was two years ago."

Jin-seok's composure cracked further. "I didn't know they were filming! My friends thought it would be funny, they said they'd delete it, but then it got out and everything spiraled and my father—"

"Your father what? Decided to ruin an innocent family to protect your reputation?"

"My father did what he thought was best for everyone," Jin-seok said, but his voice lacked conviction. "The settlement money, it helped Min-jae's family"

"Helped us?" Min-jae looked up, eyes blazing. "Helped us for what?"

"You want to know what's going on, Ji-hoon? Your new best friend here isn't some tragic transfer student... he is—"

"Stop." Jin-seok's voice cut through the air like ice. "Don't. Please!"

But Min-jae was beyond stopping now. Two years of buried pain, two years of watching me from a careful distance, two years of pretending he was okay it all came pouring out in a voice raw with hurt.

"He's my stalker, Ji-hoon. The reason I had to transfer schools. The reason my family moved across the city. The reason I wake up in cold sweats wondering if today's the day he'll come for me again."

The words hit me like physical blows. I staggered backward, my drink forgotten, plastic crinkling in my death grip.

"What?" I whispered.

Jin-seok's face had gone completely white, but his eyes... his eyes were blazing with something desperate and unhinged.

"It wasn't like that," he said, voice shaking. "You're twisting everything, making it sound—"

"Making it sound like what ?" Min-jae's laugh was bitter, broken. "Like harassment? Like obsession?"

My mind reeled. The confident, unbothered Jin-seok who'd walked into our lives that was all an act? The boy who'd seemed so mature, so in control of his own narrative...

"Tell him," Min-jae continued, stepping closer to Jin-seok with predatory intent. "Tell him how you confessed to me several times. five times, Jin-seok. I counted."

"Min-jae, please—"

"Tell him how you followed me home from school. How you showed up at my part-time job for bullying me with your friends. How you waited outside my apartment building in the rain for four hours because you 'needed to talk.'"

Each revelation felt like a punch to my gut. I looked at Jin-seok, waiting for denial, for explanation, for anything that would make this make sense.

Instead, his shoulders sagged in defeat.

"That was because I loved you," Jin-seok whispered. "I still love you. Everything I did... I thought if you just understood how much—"

"How much what?" Min-jae's voice rose to a shout. "How much you were willing to destroy my peace of mind? How much you were willing to ignore my autonomy? How much you were willing to hurt me in the name of love?"

The rain hammered against the windows, but inside, the silence between Jin-seok's words felt deafening.

"I never meant to hurt you," Jin-seok said, and for the first time since I'd known him, he looked young. Vulnerable. Broken. "I just... I couldn't understand why you wouldn't even try. We could have been perfect together."

"Because I didn't want to try!" Min-jae exploded. "Because I said no! Because no should have been enough!"

I found my voice, though it came out smaller than I intended. "The video... the one everyone talks about..."

Min-jae's face crumbled, the trauma written in every line of his expression. Jin-seok closed his eyes, as if the sight of Min-jae's pain was too unbearable ,too much for even him to face.

"I never gave my consent," Min-jae said, barely above a whisper. "He cornered me in the hallway. I was trying to get away, trying to make him understand that his constant pursuit was making my life hell. And he... he grabbed me. Kissed me. Touched me. Wouldn't let go even when I pushed him away."

My stomach turned. The confident, romantic narrative everyone whispered about Jin-seok the boy who kissed his boyfriend so passionately the whole school had watched in awe,it was all wrong. It was assault.

"Someone filmed it," Min-jae continued, his voice hollow. "Posted it online with captions about 'hot school romance' and 'passionate love.' The comments were... they made it sound like I wanted it. Like I was lucky to be chosen by someone like Jin-seok."

I looked at Jin-seok, horror and disgust warring in my chest. "You knew. You knew how it looked, and you let people think—"

"I couldn't control what people thought," Jin-seok said desperately. "I tried to get the video taken down, but it had already spread. I never wanted it to happen like that with you. I just... I lost control. I thought if I could just show you how I felt—"

"You thought you could force me to love you," Min-jae finished. "And when that didn't work, when my parents threatened to press charges, when your family's lawyers got involved and suddenly I was the problem that needed to disappear..."

The pieces were falling into place, forming a picture that made me sick. Jin-seok's family wealthy, powerful, untouchable had made Min-jae's family's life hell until they agreed to transfer him away. A quiet settlement, a buried story, a boy's trauma swept under the rug to protect a rich family's reputation.

"Your family made him leave," I said, the realization hitting me like ice water. "They forced him to transfer to protect you... to protect their image and yours."

Jin-seok's silence was answer enough.

"But it wasn't enough, was it?" Min-jae stepped closer to Jin-seok, who flinched like he expected another punch. "You couldn't stand the thought of me being free of you. So you found out where I went to school. You pulled strings, called in favors, made sure you could transfer here too."

"I just wanted to apologize," Jin-seok said weakly. "I wanted to make things right."

"Bullshit." Min-jae's voice was deadly quiet now. "You wanted to pick up where you left off. You wanted another chance to wear me down, to convince me that your obsession was really love."

I felt like I was drowning. Everything I thought I knew about the past few months was crumbling. Jin-seok's interest in me, his careful questions, his way of inserting himself into our friend group...

"You've been using me," I said, the words tasting bitter. "Getting close to me to get to him."

Jin-seok's head snapped up. "No. No, that's not—"

"Isn't it?" Min-jae's laugh was sharp enough to cut. "Tell him, Jin-seok. Tell him why you really befriended him. Tell him about all your little experiments."

Jin-seok looked trapped, cornered, desperate. When he spoke, his voice was barely a whisper. "I needed to understand. Why him and not me. What made you look at Ji-hoon the way you never looked at me."

That admission hit me like a physical blow. I stumbled backward, my back hitting the wall.

"You studied me," I said. "Like a research project. You wanted to figure out what Min-jae saw in me so you could... what? Replicate it?"

"It wasn't like that," Jin-seok said, but his protest sounded hollow even to his own ears. "At first, maybe. But then I got to know you, and you're... you're kind, Ji-hoon. You're genuine in a way that's rare. I started to care about you too."

"Don't you dare," Min-jae's voice was ice. "Don't you dare drag him into your twisted psychology. Ji-hoon has nothing to do with your obsession with me."

"Doesn't he?" Jin-seok's mask was slipping completely now, revealing something ugly underneath. "You love him. You've loved him for years. Even when I was pouring my heart out to you, even when I was begging you to give us a chance, you were already thinking about someone else."

"Because I'm allowed to love who I choose!" Min-jae shouted. "Because my heart isn't a prize you can win through persistence Bullying and manipulation!"

"But it's a prize he can win by doing nothing?" Jin-seok gestured at me wildly. "This kid doesn't even appreciate what he has! He runs from your feelings, treats your confession like a burden, keeps you at arm's length because he's too cowardly to take a risk. And you still choose him over me?"

The venom in his voice made me recoil. This wasn't the smooth, confident transfer student I'd grown to trust. This was someone unhinged, someone who'd built an entire fantasy around ownership and possession.

"Min-jae chooses who he wants to choose," I said, finding strength in my voice. "That's not a failure on your part or a victory on mine. That's just... how hearts work."

Jin-seok turned on me, his eyes blazing. "And what about you, Ji-hoon? Are you finally going to stop running after hearing this shit? Are you finally going to admit that you love him too?"

The question hung in the air between us. Min-jae went very still beside me, and I could feel the weight of his attention like a physical thing.

"That's between me and Min-jae," I said quietly. "It has nothing to do with you."

"Everything has to do with me!" Jin-seok exploded. "I'm the reason he's here! I'm the reason he's been afraid to push you for an answer! I'm the reason he settles for crumbs of your affection instead of demanding what he deserves!"

"You're the reason he's been traumatized," I shot back. "You're the reason he has trust issues. You're the reason he can't believe that no means no."

Jin-seok flinched like I'd slapped him.

Min-jae stepped between us, his voice steady despite the tears streaming down his face. "Ji-hoon, I need you to listen to me very carefully. I'm going to call my parents, and they're going to call the police. Jin-seok has violated his restraining order by being here, and I can't... I can't keep pretending this isn't happening."

"There's a restraining order?" I stared at Jin-seok in horror.

(restraining order is a legal order issued by a court that tells a person to stop certain actions usually to protect someone from harassment, threats, stalking, or abuse.)

"Temporary," Jin-seok said quickly. "It was just to give everyone space while the lawyers worked things out. It expired months ago."

"It was renewed," Min-jae said quietly. "Last month. My parents made sure of it when we found out you'd transferred here."

Jin-seok's face went through a series of emotions shock, betrayal, rage, and finally, something that looked like broken acceptance.

"You can't," he whispered. "I've changed. I'm different now. I just wanted to be your friend."

"Friends don't stalk and hurt each other," Min-jae said firmly. "Friends don't ignore boundaries. Friends don't use other people to gather information about their obsessions."

I pulled out my phone with shaking hands. "I'm calling Woo-sung. He can come get us. And then... then we're going to figure out how to keep you safe."

"No." Jin-seok lunged forward, grabbing for my phone. "You don't understand. If this gets out, if my family finds out I violated the order... they'll send me away. Abroad. Somewhere I can never see you again, Min-jae. Please. I'll do anything. I'll leave you alone, I'll transfer schools again, just don't—"

Min-jae caught Jin-seok's wrist before he could reach me, his grip firm but not violent.

"You should have thought about that before you decided to chase me across the city," he said sadly. "I'm done protecting you from the consequences of your choices."

Jin-seok broke down then, completely and utterly. He slumped against the vending machine, sobbing with the abandon of someone whose carefully constructed world had finally collapsed.

"I just loved you so much," he whispered between sobs. "I still do. I don't know how to stop."

"That's not love," Min-jae said gently, and the compassion in his voice nearly broke my heart. "That's possession. Love means wanting someone to be happy, even if it's not with you. Love means respecting their choices, even when they hurt you."

"How do I learn that?" Jin-seok looked up at him with desperate, red-rimmed eyes. "How do I become someone capable of loving you the right way?"

"You start by getting help," I said quietly. "Professional help for your brain And stay away from Min-jae while you figure out."

Jin-seok nodded slowly, like he was finally beginning to understand the magnitude of what he'd done.

Outside, the storm was beginning to quiet. But inside, we were all just beginning to process the devastation that had been hiding in plain sight for months.

As we waited for help to arrive, I found myself looking at Min-jae with new eyes seeing not just the boy I'd been too scared to love, but the survivor who'd been protecting everyone around him, including me, from a truth too ugly to bear alone from past months. We left school for home afterwards.

And for the first time in two years, I knew exactly what choice I needed to make.
