Gallantwitch Eden Lie

The First Shadow

The First Shadow

Jun 25, 2026

The playful giggles of the water spirits abruptly turned into terrified shrieks. In a flash of dim light, the tiny creatures vanished beneath the ripples of the river, leaving Aria standing frozen in the shallow water.

Three figures stepped out from the dense treeline, their heavy boots splashing into the mud. They wore tattered, dark cloaks, but what caught Aria's attention was the weapon held by the leader—a jagged, rusted iron blade that leaked a thick, foul-smelling black smoke.

As Aria stared at the weapon, her dark elf heritage allowed her to see past the smoke. Beneath the metal, a sinister, pulsing dark aura radiated violently. Her breath hitched. *That aura... it wasn't forged by a normal blacksmith. It was created from the core of a terrifyingly powerful monster.*

"Well, well. Look what we found playing in the mud," the leader sneered, his rough voice dripping with malice. "A runaway dark elf. The High Council pays a pretty price for your bloodline, girl."

Aria’s body tensed, the heavy weight of her cursed lineage screaming at her to run. But then, she remembered the warmth of the spirits and the weight of her own promise. *I need to build my own resolve.* She stepped back onto the riverbank, her hands shaking but her gaze hardening as she began to channel her magic. "Leave this place," she said, her voice determined. "I am not your prey."

"A feisty one!" the second cloaked man chuckled, gripping a heavy club. "Let's use what that man gave us. Put on a show she'll never forget! Once she's dead, we can just tell the Guild we came at the last second, but we were too late to save her."

The leader swung the rusted blade forward. The black smoke violently exploded outward, shaping itself into a pack of snarling, phantom shadow beasts that lunged straight across the water toward Aria.

Aria clasped her hands together, forcing her mana to ignite. "Mirage Wall!" she shouted. A shimmering, iridescent barrier of defensive magic rippled into view just as the shadow beasts slammed into it. The phantom monsters clawed furiously at the barrier, the pressure sending sharp jolts of pain through Aria’s arms, but she gritted her teeth and held the wall.

"She's blocking it! Break her line!" the third man roared, drawing a crossbow coated in the same dark, toxic rot.

Before he could pull the trigger, a sudden, violent sonic boom shattered the canopy above.

"Get away from her!" a furious voice roared.

Like a bolt of lightning, Riki plummeted from the high branches, his descending momentum creating a crater in the mud. With a single, blistering sweep of his hand, he executed a precise kinetic strike that snapped the crossbowman's weapon cleanly in half, launching the man violently into a tree trunk with a sickening crack.

Riki slid into a perfect battle stance right in front of Aria, his sharp eyes burning with a dangerous, protective fury.

"Master Riki!" Aria gasped, the Mirage Wall dissolving as relief washed over her.

"Tch. I told you I'd be back," Riki gritted his teeth, his eyes locking onto the two remaining cloaked men, who were now backing away in sudden panic. Riki’s gaze drifted to the leaking black smoke on the leader's blade, his knuckles turning white. "That energy... it smells like a rotting carcass. Who gave you that weapon?"

The leader gritted his teeth, his malicious grin turning desperate as he raised the smoking iron blade. "You're too late, protector! The south belongs to the true master now!"
