Chapter 1.1 (Season 1 Premiere l)

Chapter 1.1 (Season 1 Premiere l)

Jul 06, 2026

The moving truck pulled up in front of the modest, two-bedroom suburban house. The first floor was brick, but the second floor was white vinyl siding. The houses on each side were similar in shape, but the siding was different colors. The house on the left was light blue, and the house on the right was a pale yellow. At the yellow house, two young men played basketball in the driveway with a hoop over the garage.

The truck door opened and a young woman stepped out, squinting in the sun. She was about five and a half feet tall, and had a slender, willowy build. Her hair was brown, except underneath where she'd dyed it a dark green. With her hair up in a messy ponytail, the green was especially visible. Her eyes were a standout feature of her face, being an almost orangey amber color.

When she walked to the back of the truck and opened it up, the sound of the basketball hitting the pavement stopped. When she turned around, a box in hand, the two men stood behind her.

"Hi there," the first guy greeted. He flashed a smile, showing off slightly elongated canines. The girl observed his golden eyes, which stood out against his warm, brown skin. His dark hair was cut in a neat fade, a bit longer on top, the soft waves sticking to his sweaty brow. He was easily over six feet tall and quite ripped. He was hot, that was for sure; in more ways than one. He was wearing a yellow polo shirt and khaki shorts with some high quality basketball shoes.

The girl offered an uncertain smile in return and glanced at the other guy.

"Hello. You just moving in?" he asked, a little awkwardly. He was very pale, especially compared to his friend. His black hair was cut in a striking side shave, with the buzzed right side of his head dyed a royal blue. His face was beautiful, especially his pale, cyan colored eyes. He was shorter than the other guy, but still a bit taller than the girl. He was also kind of skinny, though he did have some visible muscle definition in his arms, which were revealed by the black, sleeveless hoodie he had on over black skinny jeans. He had gauges in his ears, large enough to be noticeable but not enough to drastically enlarged his earlobes. He also had two studs in his left ear and one on his right, plus cuffs on the cartilage near the top. In addition to that, he had a bar through his left eyebrow and a ring in his right nostril. All his piercings were black. He was very goth, and very pretty.

"Ahem, yes, I am. Hence the, uh, truck," the girl replied, gesturing with the box in hand towards the truck, using that as an excuse to tear her eyes away from the pretty boy in front of her.

"I'm Lucas, and this is Claude," the first guy said, gesturing towards the second guy as he spoke. They both eyed the new girl rather intently.

"You can call me Rue," the girl answered. "It's nice to meet you." Neither of these two guys were human, Rue was pretty sure of that. The first guy smelled like some kind of canine, and she was pretty sure the pretty boy was a vampire. His alternative look was a bit cliché for what he was, but he looked so hot that Rue couldn't really hold it against him. Since it seemed like they wanted to talk, she set the box back on the truck and turned to face them, returning their intense looks with one of her own.

"Roo, like, a kangaroo?" Claude asked, cracking a sweet smile that showed off his fangs. They were smaller than expected, but still noticeably longer than the average human's, and way sharper. Between that and the round shape of his ears, Rue guessed he must be a turned vampire rather than a born one.

"No, no. R-u-e, like the flower... and regret," she answered with a cryptic smile.

"That makes more sense. Pretty," Claude said.

"I hope you don't mind me asking, but you're..." Lucas glanced around briefly, checking they were still alone in the street before continuing. "You're fae, right?"

Rue blinked. She supposed another canine would be able to scent she wasn't human, but she was surprised he could tell that specifically.

"Oh, she does smell fae now that you mention it," Claude said with a tilt of his head, expression thoughtful as his index finger poked his chin. "But I thought she was a werewolf at first."

Lucas elbowed Claude, who grunted and looked at him in surprise.

"Yes, I am fae," Rue said, clearing her throat to suppress a chuckle. These two were funny!

"Is it rude to ask what kind?" Lucas asked carefully.

"No," Rue answered, smiling a bit.

For a beat, nobody said anything. Rue's smile widened a little.

"Uh, so then, what kind of fae are you?" Claude finally asked.

Rue's smile widened into a full smirk. "It'd be more fun if you guessed."

"There's hundreds of varieties of fae, how could we guess?" Claude asked, his disappointment clear.

"I could give you a hint?" she offered.

"Some kind of canine," Lucas guessed, though he didn't look certain.

"Yes, please. I need a hint!" Claude said at almost the same time.

Rue's smirk became a mischievous grin. After a moment, her human ears were replaced by a pair of fluffy red ears on top of her head. They were pointed like a wolf's, but the tips pitched forward, a bit like a border collie's ears, but less dramatic.

The two guys stared at her ears, gobsmacked, until she put them away.

"That... Doesn't really help," Claude complained.

Rue laughed. She hadn't said the hint would actually be helpful!

"I guess it confirms canine, at any rate," Lucas said with a wry smile. "Kind of a brick red, so more red than a fox, but not really a crimson," he mused.

"I don't really know what that could mean though!" Claude complained, lifting his hands.

Rue laughed aloud. They were so amusing!

"Is it a secret?" Lucas asked.

New series! Woohoo!
Ok, this one is going to be different. The intention is for this to be a long-running webseries rather than a traditional novel. We've got an ensemble cast, extensive world-building, deep dives into folklore, and lots of planning. I'm very excited about it!

Schedule! That's important to mention.
Patreon will get 1 chapter a week, every Friday, for all tiers, aside from breaks.
Tapas will get 1 chapter a month, posted Monday-Friday the second week of every month.
Wattpad will get 1 chapter every other week, after a bulk drop of the first 4 chapters, but that will be delayed until October!

The neighbor on your left is a sweet, earnest, goth-boy vampire with a side-shave dyed blue. The neighbor on your right is a kind, reliable, popular-guy werewolf with a clean-cut look. Which of these two best friends do you choose?

On the surface, Shady Glen is a sleepy little college town in a valley in the southern Rockies. But underneath, it hides a secret: myths and folklore come to life!

Rue just moved there to start college, hoping to have the first normal school experience of her life after a childhood of constantly moving around. Was her mother just paranoid to keep running away all this time, or was her father really still searching for her? Rue just hoped Shady Glen's high supernatural population would help camouflage her. The Supernatural Protection Agency certainly thought so.

With a new friend group at her back and a debt to the S.P.A. to pay off, Rue must deal with both supernatural and average college student problems, along with the complications of budding romance, all while trying to avoid the attention of the Unseelie Court.

Will she find love and happiness, or be forced back to Faerie as a slave of the Unseelie Court?
