'So, let me start first,' Jiwoo said as she shifted in her seat to face Vivi, 'You're going to Korea as a visit or...?' she paused waiting for Vivi to answer
'Well, I am going there to work as a nurse...I got a letter of invitation from this hospital to work as an intern as I won the scholarship' Vivi answered with ease in her voice as she got a bit familiar with Jiwoo.
'That sounds nice, you must be very smart, congratulations though,' Jiwoo said flashing another toothy smile
The air hostess now came towards their seats, ‘Tea or coffee?’ She asked with the same smile she gave to every other passenger on the plane.
‘Coffee please.' Vivi replied.
The air hostess poured the coffee in a cup and handed it to Violette. She then asked the same to Jiwoo with the same practiced expression and tone.
'I’d like Coffee please.’ Jiwoo said, replicating her smile back.
Violette felt Jiwoo was so amazing to be able to communicate with anyone and match their energy effortlessly. She wished she had such talent. She found it difficult to communicate with others, she always thought she was a boring person which was probably the reason why she did not have any friends. She celebrated her every birthday alone with her parents. Though she was not complaining about it, but she felt a bit sad for not having any girlfriends she could hang out with or share her thoughts to. She never experienced the teenage joy of having sleepovers with girlfriends, where they discuss about boys and give each other makeover (like she saw in many movies).
The air hostess lingered over them a little longer, this time asking their meal preferences and handing it to them accordingly and moved on to other passengers.
‘So, you must be missing your family and friends then?' Jiwoo started again taking a sip from her coffee.
‘Oh..er...yes absolutely. I miss my parents, well I don't have many friends to miss.’ she lied, she did not have any friend, but she did not want to sound miserable, hence, she kept it to herself. 'Well, why don't you tell me what you were here for in this small town?'
‘Oh! Sure, so I was here for a little break, I wanted a vacation and some fresh air away from the city,'
Vivi now did not feel as hesitant to talk to Jiwoo as she did before, she was in fact glad that she had a chance to communicate with someone during her long flight and Jiwoo was just perfect for it. She had a way of easing the atmosphere without making anyone feel nervous, and Vivi felt at ease speaking with her. The whole flight hours went smoothly. Vivi and Jiwoo spent hours talking about different topics, Vivi asked her about how South Korea was like to be in and other related things. Jiwoo told her all about how respecting elders is a very important part of their culture and made a "Things not to do in Korea" list for Vivi. Vivi read the rules out aloud, all the ten to fifteen things Jiwoo mentioned on the small sticky note.
'Wonderful!' exclaimed Jiwoo each time she said the correct thing.
Violette was glad to have Jiwoo accompany her, her fear almost gone now.
Time flew and soon it was time for Vivi to leave the plane and head towards her actual adventure.
