Chapter Fifteen

Chapter Fifteen

Jul 15, 2026

Five days passed, Sequoia still laid in her bed, feeling like it had been an eternity since she last moved. Her temporary caretakers and her twin would come in every so often to check on her and to change her bandages. They refused to let her out of her bed, telling her off and forcing her back on it whenever she tried to walk. She grew bored and tired of the routine she soon found herself in. The two things keeping her sane were her usual nightmares not plaguing her sleep and the thought that this day was hopefully the last day she had to stay on the bed.

As soon as the roads started to get busy, a hand politely knocked on the door. “Who is it?” Sequoia asked cautiously, after all Acanthus would barge in and the men have a much harsher and rough knock. “It is Doctor Balm and Doctor Perscaria, we are here for your checkup.” Sequoia shot up, combing her fingers through her matted hair, wanting to look at least a bit presentable. “You can come in.” The doctors opened the door, giving a polite nod to the girl. Doctor Perscaria was the first one to speak. “How are you feeling today?” The girl looked at her fidgeting hands. “I’m alright, there’s no pain or anything.” Doctor Perscaria gave a soft smile. “That’s good to hear. I’m going to unwrap your bandages and take a look, if there’s any pain or discomfort let us know. Doctor Balm has some of her potions ready if needed.” Sequoia gave a nervous nod. As the doctor got to work unwrapping and assessing the leg, Sequoia’s mind was plagued with questions, specifically why she wasn’t having her nightmares. “What is on your mind?” Doctor Balm questioned. Sequoia’s eyes drifted to the side, not wanting to bother the doctors more “It’s nothing important.” Doctor Balm sighed “We are doctors, we cannot help our patients if they do not tell us what is upsetting them.” Doctor Perscaria looked into the girl’s, speaking in a soft and warm voice “I think what the doctor means is that we need our patients to tell us what’s wrong so we can help, even if it seems small it could be a warning sign of something bigger. So can you tell us what’s the matter?” The girl shuffled around, uncomfortable from the long rest. “It’s just that, I used to have dreams about the night when my parents died and… this happened. But recently I haven’t dreamt of it, or anything for that matter. I guess I’m just wondering if I’m cured and I was just weird for having those dreams” The doctors sat in silence for a moment, looking at each other. Doctor Balm was the first to answer “It isn’t our area of expertise” She was quick to admit “but from my understanding, what you have gone through was essentially a wound, similar to your foot. It is something that won’t fully heal, but can be helped along with certain medications or professional help. Your mind is not processing this pain through just your dreams but through other ways, but I’m not sure how exactly, which is why I imagine that your nightmares have stopped. As for if you are weird for having them, you most certainly are not. Many young and old have their own injuries of the mind, it comes in different forms, but many of them are living lives they are happy with. This is as much as I can say on the matter.” Sequoia looked down to her leg, a pained expression plastered across her face. “I see, so is it going to get worse?” This time doctor Perscaria was the one to answer, placing his hand on the young girl’s. “We aren’t sure, we only know the basics, if we were to say anymore we would only be guessing. If you would like, we can see if we can introduce you to an expert who can answer more of your questions. Although there is no guarantee that they will be able to since they are rather busy.” Sequoia’s face doesn’t seem any less relieved, although after a moment, the girl looked up to the doctors, forcing a smile on her face. “I see, well thank you, how’s my ankle?” The doctors sigh, knowing that it’s best to drop the subject for now. “Your wound is healed. There have been no complications, so now it’s just waiting for your prosthesis.” The girl gave a nod to the doctor, thanking them once again. The doctors stood, moving towards the door “Let us know if you ever need anything.” Doctor Perscaria said with a comforting smile before leaving the room. When the door clicked shut Sequoia’s smile dropped and she buried her face in her chin, weeping softly.

Thank you for reading chapter 15! I am pretty happy with how this chapter has turned out, hopefully it doesn't come across as insensitive or that I am oversimplifying people who have trauma/PTSD. Anywho, I hope you enjoyed this chapter, let me know what you think and if there's anything you think I can improve on, thank you once again!
