Spells of the silk and shadow

Chapter 2: The Art of Being an Annoyance

Chapter 2: The Art of Being an Annoyance

Jul 17, 2026

The carriage stood waiting in the courtyard, its obsidian frame gleaming under the pale, grey sky. Kael spent the final moments before departure in absolute, mechanical precision. He checked the alignment of his twin daggers, adjusted the straps of his leather gauntlets, and ensured his smoke-sigils were charged. Every movement was practiced. Every breath was calculated.
He walked toward the carriage door, expecting to find his target securely inside. He scanned the velvet seats. Empty.
Kael turned on his heel, his dead eyes shifting to the gathered elders of the Lilum Clan. "Where is Rin?"
The simple, blunt question sent a wave of absolute terror through the courtyard. The clan leader and the elders immediately began to yell in panic, their voices overlapping in a frantic, high-pitched chorus of dread. To them, a missing heir meant an imminent assassination.
Kael remained perfectly calm. While the elders panicked, he dropped to one knee. Channeling a low current of dark magic, he released a thick swirl of shadow-smoke across the stone tiles. The magical mist clung to the ground, instantly illuminating a faint trail of glowing footprints leading away from the courtyard.
He wandered off toward the outskirts.
Without a word, Kael vanished into the trees, following the trail. He drew his primary dagger, his muscles coiled to strike down whatever threat had taken the boy. He burst through a thick patch of brambles into a wide, rocky clearing, his eyes instantly tracking a massive shadow.
It was a giant, feathered sky-beast—a wild creature capable of snapping a man in half.
But there was no blood. Instead, Rin was standing directly beneath the creature's towering beak, casually patting its beak as if it were a common house pet.
"Oh! If it isn't the fish-face boy!" Rin chirped, spotting Kael immediately. He waved a silk-sleeved arm, his face lighting up with that same radiant, infuriating warmth.
Kael let out a slow breath, smoothly sheathing his weapon. The dark aura around his hands dissipated. "We need to head back. The others are worried about you."
Rin immediately pouted, his delicate lips crossing into a heavy frown. "No way. Going back right now would be so boring. Let's stay out here and play for a bit!"
"There is no time," Kael replied, his voice flat and unyielding. "And it is bad practice to make people worry about you. Come."
Kael stepped forward, reaching out an iron-grip hand to secure Rin’s wrist and force him back toward the carriage. But the moment his fingers brushed Rin's sleeve, the giant creature suddenly panicked. With a massive sweep of its feathered wings, it took flight into the sky—and its talons accidentally snagged the back of Rin's flowing robes, lifting him straight into the air.
"Rin!" Kael’s assassin calm shattered into pure panic.
Without thinking, Kael lunged forward, throwing his entire weight into a desperate leap. His fingers caught the hem of Rin’s lower robes just as the beast soared a dozen feet above the treeline. Kael hung on with an iron grip, swinging precariously in the open air beneath the floating boy.
Instead of screaming in terror, a melodic, bell-like laughter echoed from above.
"Wow! This is amazing!" Rin laughed, looking down at Kael with absolute glee as the wind whipped through his vibrant hair. "This is so exciting! It beats being couped up in that suffocating house all day. Life is short, Kael! If I'm going to go out eventually, I might as well go out like a wildfire—burning wild and bright until I'm completely extinguished!"
Kael looked up, his breath catching in his throat. For a single, fleeting second, something inside him sparked. Rin’s words—the wild, reckless beauty of wanting to live brightly—struck a chord deep within the monochrome walls of his heart. It was a beautiful thought.
Pointless drivel, a dark, distorted echo whispered from the back of his mind. The cold hallucination of his inner self sneered, suffocating the spark. You are a killer. That is all you are good at. There is no room for good times or fun in a weapon. You belong in the grey.
The cold reality locked back into place. Kael’s expression hardened. Using his immense upper-body strength, he began to climb up the silk fabric of Rin's robes, moving with the agile precision of a shadow.
"Time is up," Kael muttered, reaching the beast's talons. With a quick, precise strike from the butt of his dagger, he forced the creature to release its grip. "We must return."
"Oh, poo," Rin sighed as they free-fell for a brief second before Kael caught him fully in his arms, landing heavily but safely on a thick, mossy branch below.
Kael adjusted his grip, pulling Rin flush against his chest to carry him down the tree. Suddenly, Kael’s mind went entirely blank.
The boy was impossibly light. Through the fine silk layers, his skin felt incredibly soft—nothing like the rough, scarred bodies of the soldiers Kael lived around. And he smelled completely intoxicating, like fresh linen and rare magical blooms.
What am I even thinking? Kael thought, a sudden, frantic jolt of panic hitting his chest. He forces his gaze straight ahead, refusing to look down at the beautiful face resting just inches from his neck.
As they walked back toward the carriage, the silence settled between them again. Rin looked at Kael’s rigid profile, his playful smile softening into something a bit more genuine.
"Hey," Rin murmured softly, resting his hands against Kael's dark armor. "I know we just met today... but that was actually really fun."
Kael looked at him for a brief moment, the grey world briefly threatening to turn into color again. But he kept his eyes focused entirely on the path ahead, moving forward into the dark.

Kill. Eat. Sleep. Repeat.Since he was a child, that was the only rhythm Kael ever knew. To him, the world was a canvas painted entirely in shades of blood-red and monochrome grey. He wasn't a person; he was merely a weapon forged in the shadows of a brutal fantasy realm.Until he crossed paths with Rin. Radiant, elegant, and woven from light, this mysterious boy breaks every rule of the assassin's dark universe. For the first time in his life, the grey begins to bleed into vibrant color. But can a boy whose hands are stained with a thousand deaths truly learn what it means to be human again—or will his shadows consume the only light he has ever known?
