All this time, I’ve been focusing on my life, my relationship with my dad, spending time with Elias, exercising, trying to avoid Hannah’s constant nagging, and concentrating on my university studies.
Everything was fine and absolutely perfect… But sometimes I’d feel a pang of longing for Johan and wonder what he was up to now. Had he forgotten me? Was he still asking about me? Or was it true, as my dad said, that he was just using me?
I decided to reactivate my social media accounts to see what he was up to. ‘Yes, I’d deactivated my social media so I could focus on my own life,’ and I was stunned by what I saw!
32,870 messages on Instagram! And 1,872 missed calls!
That’s just on Instagram – he’d sent me loads on other apps too, and he’d even reached my email!
I was scared to open the messages, but I read them anyway. I didn’t feel at ease at all; my body was trembling, my breath was coming in gasps, and my heart was pounding like the drums of war.
I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, opened the messages and read them one by one.
He started by sending flirty messages and pleading, asking only to hear my voice.
Then the messages took on a threatening tone, with him threatening to harm himself! He sent me photos of his hand bleeding – it looked as though he’d done something to himself!
I carried on reading, and the messages became even more terrifying. He was threatening to kill and torture me, to keep my head in a jar, and he also threatened to burn down my family’s mansion – and even to kill my stepmother’s dog, though, to be honest, I don’t understand what the dog has to do with any of this?
I shut off my phone and didn’t realise I was crying so hard I couldn’t breathe from the terror. I grabbed my inhaler and used it, then lay down on the bed, staring at the ceiling, my heart nearly stopping.
“What am I supposed to do!?”
I kept repeating the question as my tears soaked my bed.
“I don’t want anyone to get hurt because of me. I don’t want that.”
I covered my eyes with my arms as I sobbed uncontrollably.
It took a while before I calmed down a little. Then I picked up my phone and sent a message to Elias:
“Hi Elias, I want to ask you a question…”
I sent the message, then deleted it straight away… Maybe if he found out what had happened, he might tell my dad, and he might call the police, and Johan might get arrested and sent to prison!
But Johan’s definitely angry – after all, I’m the one who’s been ignoring him for days. I’m sure we can sort this out between ourselves.
“Yes, I’ll talk to him and we’ll make up, and he’ll understand my situation,”
I told myself as I wiped away the last of my tears and gathered my strength to meet him…
“But if I meet him and my dad finds out… No, no, he won’t find out. I won’t tell him, and this will be my last meeting with Johan… ‘Yes, I’ll tell him we’re breaking up because of my dad, and he’ll understand.’”
I opened my phone again and sent a message to Johan.
“Hi Johan… I’d like to meet up with you. Are you free?”
The reply came back quicker than I’d imagined.
“Yes, I am… How about coming to the old camp hut? We used to spend time there, if you remember.”
I read the message and felt relieved; he seemed calm, so I wrote back to him:
