The next morning, my heart hammered against my ribs before I even opened my eyes. Yesterday's phone call with Min-jae"We need a proper conversation."—had looped through my mind all night. What did he have planned? I was nervous , yes, but impossibly excited too.
I threw on my uniform, barely tasting breakfast, and bolted out the door. Every step toward school felt like running a marathon. By the time I reached the front gate, I'd imagined at least ten disaster scenarios: he'd be furious, he'd never want to see me again...... or, maybe the complete opposite.
Min-jae stood under the pale morning sun, leaning casually against the iron railing by the gate. His blazer's crisp lines and freshly ironed uniform made him look as if he'd stepped out of a brochure for the "Ideal Student" award. His tie was perfectly centered at his collar, his shoes gleaming. I'd seen him hurry to class, laugh with friends, help teachers—everything was composed and precise. But this morning, he looked almost casual. Like he'd been waiting for me, but without the careful distance he sometimes kept.
When our eyes met, his warm black gaze held me in place. His smile—steady, reassuring—felt like a lifeline.
He pushed off the railing and walked toward me. "Morning, sidekick," he said, his tone light. He used my nickname—sidekick—and it made my chest tighten.
"Good morning, Min-jae," I managed, my voice barely above a whisper. My throat felt dry, as if my words were running through sand.
He tilted his head, studying my face with those warm black eyes. "You look like you didn't sleep. Were you thinking about something?" "Maybe." I said.
His grin widened. "Good." He stepped closer, close enough that I could smell his scent of vanilla . "So—what did you sign up for to get extra credit? Sports? Electives?"
I blinked, completely lost. "I... I totally forgot about the credits."
"Seriously?" He raised an eyebrow, reaching into his blazer. "Today's the last day to register." With a little flourish, he pulled out slip of paper. "Yoga for Mind & Body . I already signed us up for yoga." he said
My chest clenched. "You did what?"
He laughed lightly,"I figured if we're going to have proper conversations, we might as well do it somewhere we can actually breathe." Before I could protest, his hand closed over mine, sending a jolt of electricity racing up my arm. "Come on... it's getting late." His hand felt warm, solid against mine, steering me through the gate as though I were the most precious thing he'd ever held. My knuckles turned white, but I didn't pull away. Not even for a second.
We made it to our classroom just as the first bell rang. Min-jae still hadn't let go of my hand, and I was hyperaware of every curious glance from our classmates. My palm was sweating, but he didn't seem to care.
"Yo, lovebirds!" Woo-sung's voice cut through the morning chatter as he bounded over to us, backpack bouncing. "What's with the hand-holding parade? Did I miss something dramatic?" I tried to pull away, but Min-jae's grip tightened gently."Just making sure Ji-hoon doesn't get lost," Min-jae said with that mischievous "You know how directionally challenged he is."
"Hey!" I protested, cheeks burning. "I only got lost once!"
Min-jae feigned offense. "Twice. Remember when you wandered into the girls' bathroom because you were walking while daydreaming?"
Woo-sung burst out laughing. "Oh my god, yes! And you came out screaming like you'd seen a ghost!"
"I saw them putting on lipstick!" I defended, though I knew how ridiculous it sounded. "They weren't conjuring spirits," Min-jae teased, his thumb tracing gentle circles on my palm. "They were just doing makeup."
Just then, Mr. Kim walked in, saving me from further embarrassment. "Good morning, class. Before we start announcements, I need to remind everyone that credit class begins today. If you haven't signed up for your electives, this is your last chance."
Woo-sung's eyes went wide. "Crap—I forgot about that. What'd you guys pick?"
"Min-jae signed us up for yoga," I said, still trying to process the fact that he was holding my hand strongly yet casually in front of our entire classroom while we stood there.
"Yoga?" Woo-sung raised an eyebrow. "Since when are you into stretchy poses and meditation?" Min-jae exchanged conspiratorial glance with me. "To help Ji-hoon with flexibility. Better posture for drawing."
My eyes bulged. "Drawing?"
He shrugged innocently. "Yeah. Drawing. Better posture helps with sketching."
Woo-sung snorted. "Right. For posture." He flashed me a mischievous grin before turning back to his desk. "Have fun with your... flexibility training."
Min-jae's eyes sparkled with something that looked dangerously close to anticipation. "I'll just help him if he needs support." The way he said it and with just a hint of suggestion made my stomach do backflips.
"Alright, class," Mr. kim announced. "Credit classes begin now. Don't be late, and remember these count toward your final grades." As students began filing out,Woo-sung gathered his things. "Well, have fun with your... flexibility training," he said with air quotes. "Try not to mess with anything important."He winked at me, then winked at Min-jae, who winked back as if they'd shared some private joke.I wanted to sink into my seat, but Min-jae's hand still held mine.
"No promises," Min-jae replied, finally releasing my hand ."See you at lunch?" I asked Woo-sung. "yes , If you can still walk after all that stretching," he called over his shoulder, dodging my attempt to throw my eraser at him.
Then In Yoga Class
First two period yoga was held in the converted auditorium. The harsh fluorescent lights had been replaced with soft, warm bulbs. Incense drifted through the air something floral and calming. Gentle instrumental music floated from speakers. I set my mat beside Min-jae's, my heart still pounding from the way he'd taken charge this morning.
"You nervous?" he asked, settling onto his mat with fluid grace. I forced a smile. "No! Why would I be nervous? Anyway... thanks for signing me up without asking." He shrugged, that teasing glint back in his eyes. "I just wanted more time with you. Yoga seemed like the perfect excuse to touch you legally. Haa haaa!"He chuckled.
My face went nuclear. "Min-jae!". "What?" His expression was pure innocence, but the smirk tugging at his lips gave him away. "It's partner yoga. Touching is required."
Before I could combust from exitement, the instructor, serene woman in her twenties with kind eyes called for attention. "Good morning, everyone. Today we'll focus on breath work and partner poses. Find someone you trust."
Min-jae's eyes met mine. "Trust me?". The question was loaded with meaning that went far beyond yoga. I just nodded, not trusting my voice.
We started with Sukhasana—easy seated pose. I tried to focus on my breathing, but all I could think about was Min-jae's hand once more in mine. His palms were warm, his touch light yet firm. I closed my eyes to steady myself.
"Breathe with me," Min-jae whispered, his voice low enough that only I could hear. "In... and out."
I closed my eyes, syncing my breath with his. Slowly, the chaos in my mind began to settle. . When I glanced at him, his eyes were closed, face peaceful and focused. In that moment, all my fears seemed ridiculous. This is Min-jae..my Min-jae. The boy who'd waited two years for me to stop being afraid.
Virabhadrasana II came next. As I extended my arms, Min-jae's arm swept parallel to mine. Our hands nearly touched, and every small brush of his hands against mine sent sparks through my veins. I couldn't decide whether to focus on my pose or on the way his proximity made my fingers tingle.
"Feel the strength in your foundation," the instructor called out. "Let that stability ground you". Min-jae's steady presence beside me was the most grounding thing I'd ever experienced.
The next pose was even more challenging: Camel Pose with partner assistance. I knelt, hands on my lower back, preparing to arch backward. Then I felt Min-jae's hands one on my lower back, one on my shoulder blade—guiding me deeper into the stretch.
"Trust me," he whispered, his breath warm against my ear. "I won't let you fall."
"How does it feel?" he asked, his voice soft and intimate.
"Perfect," I managed, the word coming out more breathless than I intended.
"Relax," he whispered, and I allowed my body to soften. My thoughts slowed to follow only his voice.
Then came the moment I'd been dreading and anticipating in equal measure: partner poses.
"Double tree pose," the instructor announced. "Face your partner, press your palms together at heart center, then mirror each other's movements."
My heart stopped. I turned to find Min-jae already watching me, his expression patient and encouraging.
"We've got this," he said softly.
We pressed our palms together, and I felt the warmth of his skin against mine. I lifted my right foot to my left calf, arms reaching overhead. My breath shook as I tried to find my balance. Then I felt Min-jae's free hand, steady and sure, at my waist.
"I've got you," he murmured, his voice so gentle it made me blush.
I dared to look into his eyes—warm black, filled with pride and something tender that made my heart always skip a beat. We held the pose for several breaths, and I felt his presence so acutely: his steady inhale matching my unsteady one, his fingers barely grazing my hip. When we released the pose, I didn't want to let go.
"Beautiful work" the instructor said, and I realized she was looking at us. "You two have good synchronization."
My face burned, but Min-jae just smiled.
After Yoga class, the auditorium emptied until only Min-jae and I remained. We sat cross-legged on our mats, facing each other, the afternoon light streaming through the windows and turning everything golden.
"How do you feel?" he asked, his eyes bright and searching."Better than I have in weeks," I admitted. "More... centered, I guess."
He nodded. "Yoga does that. But I think it was more than just the poses."
"What do you mean?" I Said.
He reached out, fingertips finding mine. His touch was light, almost tentative. "I mean being honest. Not hiding, not shying away." He said.I swallowed hard. "No more walls," I whispered. His smile returned, radiant enough to blind me. "Exactly."Our fingers interlaced, and for a heartbeat, everything felt perfect. My chest swelled with hope.
Then the door burst open.
"Again...!" Without even looking at the door, we both exclaimed in unison.
"Guys!" Woo-sung barreled in, eyes wide with excitement. "You won't believe what's happening in History class! There's a new substitute teacher, and she's—"
He stopped mid-sentence, taking in our joined hands, our positions on the mats, the way we were looking at each other.
"Oh," he said, his voice suddenly much quieter. "Am I interrupting something?" Min-jae and I sprang apart like we'd been burned. My face went nuclear, but Min-jae just laughed."What were you saying about the substitute?" Min-jae asked, standing and offering me his hand.
Woo-sung's eyes narrowed, studying us with the intensity of a detective. "She's apparently famous for being super strict and having crazy pop quizzes . But more importantly— Crazy Figure".
Min-jae cleared his throat, regaining composure. "So, substitute teacher, huh? Lead the way." Woo-sung blinked, then recovered with a grin. "Right. Let's go."
