“Chief Abbers.” Bayley looked up at the Beta.

“Beta Alex,” Bayley stammered shooting to her feet. “Please, take a seat,” she waved to the chairs across her desk.

“I’ll stand,” Alex gave a curt smile, her face quickly stoning. “I heard about what you did yesterday.”

Bayley shrank in her seat, “Beta Alex-”

“You chased her. You cornered her,” Alex said coldly.

“Is she okay? I didn’t mean to scare her- I went to talk to her-”

“I’m aware.” Alex sighed. “Bayley, I know you want to…get to know her but you can’t force someone to like you.”

“I know-”

Alex glared, “You need to back off. Let her come to you. I don’t want to here about you chasing her into an alleyway and two pack members having to step in.” Alex raised her eyebrow.

“I understand.”

Alex nods, turning to leave. “I know your a good person Chief Abbers, but if I hear of you harassing my omega ever again I won’t be so nice.”

“Are you okay?” Manny asked, shifting the stack of files in his arms. Bayley had been sitting, staring at her screen for nearly an hour and he wasn’t sure she was breathing. “Do I need to call someone?” He asked reaching for his radio on his waist.

“Huh?” Bayley frowned, blinking and rubbing her eyes. “Sorry, must of zoned out,” she sighed rubbing her forehead. She was doing that a lot lately.

“Are you okay?” Manny asked again. Setting the stack on Bayley’s desk.

“Yeah, just haven’t been getting a lot of sleep.”  Bayley shook her head slightly. “I’m gonna go for a walk, patrol.” She decided, standing up from her desk. “Maybe stretching my legs will help.” She mumbled to herself as she grabbed her radio.

“Okay…Radio if you need anything!” Manny yelled after her.

“Man, I need a day off.” She mumbled to herself as she shuffled down the sidewalk. She froze as she passed Patty’s bakery. Meredith was standing at the counter, a smile on her face as she pointed at something in the glass case. Her dress brushed her legs as she bent down to get a look. Patty smiled, nodding. She said something to Meredith, causing her to laugh. Bayley froze, her stomach flipped, and her heart warmed. God, that sound- she had to hear it again. Light and carefree, it made her feel like she was gliding on air or…moving- “Shit.” Bayley yelped; the fog lifted just in time for her to realize she was in the middle of the street and a red sedan was inches from hitting her.  Her hand landed on the sedan’s hood; the driver honked, yelling profanities Bayley didn’t hear. Her attention returned to the bakery window where Meredith and Patty were looking at her. “Shit…” Bayley mumbled. She jumped as the driver honked at her again. “Okay, I get it!” Bayley yelled, throwing her hand up, stepping onto the sidewalk. When she turned around, her eyes locked onto Meredith, her brain froze, and like a complete idiot, she ran in the other direction, nearly getting run over again.

Manny hadn’t stopped laughing. She had burst into the station, choking and coughing about being stupid. She had nearly given him a heart attack before she finally got out what she was trying to say.

“You ran?” He choked between laughs.

“I didn’t know what else to do! Last time I tried to talk to her, she ran!” Bayley whined, covering her head on her desk.

“So you ran?”

“If I didn’t, she was.”

It's Meredith’s turn to have her world turned upside down. Meredith expected to be the archer if anything, not the target. She had given up on finding her mate a long time ago, the best chance you had at finding your mate was in Peak County high where every kid your age went and where most found their other half. Cheese right? But true and unfortunately for Mer unsuccessful. She was a summer baby. July 10th to be exact, when every student in her year had already found their mate or had gotten as far away from Peak County as possible including Bayley Abbers, future Chief of Peak County, and her ex-best friend. Or still friends? Bayley didn't stay to find out, after all, she couldn't mourn what she hadn't lost right?
