This is a fictional story. Any resemblance to real people, places, companies, or events is entirely coincidental.
[Current Time]
[South Korea – Nina's Apartment – Oct 31, 2025 – 08:12:37 AM]
The black dress hung from the wardrobe door.
Nina stared at it.
Then at herself.
Then back at the dress.
The mirror wasn't helping.
It never did.
"You could at least pretend to have an opinion."
The woman in the reflection remained silent.
Typical.
Nina sighed.
The dress wasn't too glamorous.
Not too revealing.
Elegant enough for a gala.
Safe enough not to attract attention.
At least that was the hope.
Her phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
Jun-ho.
Immediately, a smile tugged at her lips.
Jun-ho: "Tell me you've finally picked a dress."
Nina: "Maybe."
Jun-ho: "That means no."
Nina: "That means I'm evaluating options."
Jun-ho: "How many?"
Nina: "Three."
Jun-ho: "Liar."
A second later a photo arrived.
Dark suit.
White shirt.
Perfectly styled hair.
Infuriating confidence.
Nina: "You look like you're trying to marry a billionaire."
Jun-ho: "Excellent. Then my plan is working."
She laughed.
The first genuine laugh of the morning.
Then her eyes drifted toward the photo frame beside the television.
Yoo-joon.
The smile faded.
Because she still hadn't told him.
Not about Formula 1.
Not about Jun-ho inviting her.
Not about any of it.
Not because she wanted to hide it.
Because lately every conversation felt impossible.
[South Korea – KIC office – Oct 31, 2025 – 08:12:37 AM]
Around noon she finally saw him.
Yoo-joon stood beside a conference room window reviewing documents.
Professional.
Focused.
Beautiful.
Distant.
The last part hurt the most.
He noticed her approaching.
A small smile appeared.
Polite.
Measured.
Not the smile she loved.
"Morning."
"Morning."
For a second neither moved.
The silence felt awkward.
Something it had never been before.
"Busy day?" she asked.
"Always."
He lifted the folder slightly.
She nodded.
Trying to find something else.
Anything.
A normal conversation shouldn't be this difficult.
"How was yesterday?"
"Meetings."
Short answer.
Again.
"And after work?"
His eyes briefly left hers.
"Nothing special."
The answer wasn't rude.
Just closed.
Like a door locked from the inside.
She forced a smile.
"I see."
He glanced at his watch.
The movement felt familiar now.
Too familiar.
A signal.
An escape route.
"I have another meeting in five minutes."
Of course.
"You always do."
He looked surprised.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"Nina."
She shook her head.
"It's okay."
The silence returned.
Longer this time.
More uncomfortable.
Finally he cleared his throat.
"Let's review the fight scene tomorrow."
Work.
Again.
Only work.
Nothing else remained between them anymore.
"Sure."
"Good."
Another pause.
Then:
"I'll see you later."
And he walked away.
Leaving Nina staring at his back.
Wondering when talking to him had become harder than talking to strangers.
[South Korea – City Hall, Formula 1 Opening Gala – Nov 1, 2025 – 09:7:20 PM]
The venue glittered beneath a thousands lights.
Luxury cars reflected camera flashes.
Journalists rushed through crowds.
Music echoed between enormous LED displays.
Everything felt expensive.
Everything felt loud.
Everything felt dangerous.
Nina adjusted her hair.
Again.
Then again.
Jun-ho immediately noticed.
"You're hiding."
She rolled her eyes.
"I'm standing."
"You're standing behind a decorative plant."
"I like the plant."
"It isn't your emotional support plant."
She laughed despite herself.
"You're impossible."
"So I've been told."
His grin widened.
Then camera flashes erupted nearby.
White light exploded across the room.
One flash.
Another.
Another.
Suddenly—
Darkness.
A screen.
A shaking image.
A message.
A voice.
Cold.
Threatening.
Humiliating.
Flash.
"Think carefully."
Flash.
"One click."
Flash.
"That's all it takes."
Her chest tightened.
Air disappeared.
The gala vanished.
The lights vanished.
Everything vanished.
"Nina."
Nothing.
"Nina."
A hand gently touched her elbow.
Reality returned.
Jun-ho stood beside her.
Concern visible in his eyes.
"You disappeared."
She blinked.
"I'm fine."
"You don't look fine."
"I'm okay."
He didn't believe her.
But unlike most people —
He respected boundaries.
So instead he simply offered her a glass of water.
No questions.
No pressure.
No judgment.
Just support.
And somehow that helped.
[South Korea – KIC Office, Cafeteria – Nov 3, 2025 – 11:41:37 AM]
Lunch felt normal.
Which was probably why Nina enjoyed it.
No cameras.
No executives.
No expectations.
Just food.
Coffee.
Conversation.
Jun-ho sat across from her.
Animatedly explaining how Formula 1 teams spent ridiculous amounts of money.
"...and that's before the engineers start setting fire to the budget."
Nina laughed.
"Sounds familiar."
"Exactly."
"We do the same thing."
"The difference is Formula 1 calls it innovation."
"And we call it television."
"Same fire. Different budget."
She nearly choked on her coffee.
Across the room somebody entered.
Neither noticed immediately.
But Yoo-joon did.
The moment he stepped into the cafeteria.
His eyes found Nina automatically.
As they always did.
Then he noticed she wasn't alone.
Jun-ho.
Laughing.
Nina smiling.
Relaxed.
Comfortable.
A version of her he hadn't seen in weeks.
Something twisted painfully inside his chest.
He stood there longer than necessary.
Watching.
Not because he wanted to.
Because he couldn't stop.
Eventually Nina looked up.
Their eyes met.
The smile disappeared from her face.
Instantly.
The reaction hurt more than it should have.
Approaching the table had shaken his self-esteem too much, so Yoo-jun nodded politely from a distance.
Then he turned and left the cafeteria.
[South Korea – Yoo-Joon's Apartment – Nov 3, 2025 – 11:10:01 PM]
Sleep wasn't happening.
He had tried.
Failed.
Tried again.
Failed again.
Now his laptop sat open on the table.
The cafeteria scene replayed endlessly.
Jun-ho.
Nina.
Their conversation.
Their laughter.
Their comfort.
He hated how much it bothered him.
Mostly because he didn't understand why.
Eventually he remembered hearing something.
Formula 1.
Opening gala.
Jun-ho mentioning it.
Curiosity won.
Or maybe jealousy.
The result was the same.
He searched.
Article after article appeared.
Photographs.
Media coverage.
Corporate guests.
Sponsors.
Nothing important.
Then—
A photo.
Jun-ho.
Standing near the red carpet.
Confident.
Smiling.
Yoo-joon almost scrolled past.
Then something caught his attention.
A figure in the background.
Half-hidden.
Black dress.
Dark hair.
Only a profile.
Most people wouldn't notice.
Most people couldn't.
He zoomed in.
His heart stopped.
Nina.
She looked stunning.
Radiant.
Beautiful.
Happy.
And completely absent from every conversation they'd had.
He stared at the screen.
Not angry.
Not yet.
Just hurt.
Deeply.
Unexpectedly.
Hurt.
[South Korea – Nina's Apartment – Nov 4, 2025 – 07:10:13 AM]
Three knocks.
Sharp.
Immediate.
Urgent.
She opened the door.
Yoo-joon stood outside.
Something in his eyes made her stomach drop.
"Can I come in?"
She nodded.
Neither sat.
The silence stretched.
Finally the words forced their way through his gritted teeth.
"Were you at the Formula 1 gala?"
No greeting.
No small talk.
Straight to the point.
Nina shut her eyes for a brief moment, as if bracing herself with a deep breath before taking the plunge.
"He knows."
"Yes."
The answer came quietly.
His jaw tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
The question wasn't angry.
It was wounded.
Which somehow felt worse.
"I don't know."
"Nina."
"I really don't."
"You never mentioned it."
"You never asked."
The moment the words escaped she regretted them.
His expression changed immediately.
"So that's what this is?"
"No."
"Then what?"
She struggled for an answer.
Because the truth sounded childish.
Painful.
Embarrassing.
"You've been distant."
The words finally emerged.
Yoo-joon blinked.
"What?"
"You've been pulling away."
Silence.
"You leave conversations. You avoid personal topics. You barely answer messages. You look at your watch every time we're alone."
Each sentence landed harder than the last.
Because he knew.
Every single one was true.
"Nina..."
"I kept waiting for you to talk to me."
Her voice trembled.
"I kept thinking maybe tomorrow."
Another breath.
"Then next week."
Another.
"But every time I tried..."
She laughed sadly.
"...you gave me work updates."
Yoo-joon's eyes lowered.
For the first time his certainty disappeared.
The anger weakened.
Leaving guilt behind.
"I didn't realise —"
"Exactly."
The words weren't cruel.
They were weary.
"You didn't realise."
The silence afterward felt endless.
Finally he spoke quietly.
"You should have told me."
She nodded.
"I know."
"You shouldn't have hidden it."
"I know."
Another pause, then
"You could have trusted me."
And there it was.
The real wound.
Trust.
Nina looked directly into his eyes.
"I was trying to."
The answer shattered him.
Because she wasn't lying.
And because somehow that made everything worse.
Neither had intended to hurt the other.
Yet somehow they had managed it perfectly.
— To be continued.
