Waiting for Tomorrow (GL)

A Hard Conversation Pt 1

A Hard Conversation Pt 1

Aug 21, 2026

It was like I got hit with a ton of bricks. Even though it feels like I only just met these people, it makes me heartbroken to see how crushed they look right now. But for what reason did I do it? Was it for the same thing that made me want to run away in my dream? Could it be that everything is still exactly the same here?

I'm afraid to ask, but I need to know why “W-what do you mean? Why haven’t we talked for that long?” My dad speaks to Mr. Yamada again while my mom looks to the floor. The conversation the two of them are having looks to be painful for my mother to hear.

After a long and agonizing minute, Mr. Yamada says "You always had a great relationship with your parents, but your attitude suddenly changed around the time you were a third year. Where you used to always be cheerful and loving, you eventually became more closed off and cold towards your parents."

Well that part is different at least. It’s not enough to lower my worry, but it still sounds like I had a normal high school life.

He continues "He thinks it stems from being critical of your choice of dating partners. Whenever they tried to talk to you about it, you would lash out at them and leave the house. But he never felt they were too hard on you, they were only saying what they thought was best for you."

And there it is. I knew it was to good to be true. Though the story isn’t exactly the same, the outcome still is. I get a little defensive when I ask "What was it that was so bad about my partners?"

My mom looks worried about my response as my dad talks to Mr. Yamada again. She’s afraid that I’m going to react the same way as I did in the past based on my face and tone. I’m preparing for the worst once Mr. Yamada begins to translate what my dad said.

“They felt your dating was a little too unconventional. You seemed to have a new partner every month and they were worried you weren't taking dating seriously. All they wanted was for you to slow down and think more about who you partnered with so you wouldn’t constantly be going through break ups. But you would get upset every time saying they were too judgmental, then shut them out.”

He pauses for a second to get more information from my dad and it gives me a bit to process. It doesn’t sound anything at all like my dream. I never had a single partner, let alone multiple. And he didn’t say anything about them being woman either. Are they just in denial about that part?

After getting the story, he turns back to me and sighs before responding "They never meant to upset you, they only ever wanted you to be happy. And it was healthy for you to always be breaking up with your boyfriends then immediately getting a new one. You also let it effect..."

“What! You said boyfriends?" I shout, cutting him off while making everyone in the room flinch out of surprise.

The yelling makes him continue more cautiously “Um yes… you started dating a lot your third year. Which was surprising, since you only ever had one boyfriend, but that was back in middle school."

My head started spinning so much that I almost passed out. It wasn't mistranslated... he meant to say boyfriend... I feel like I'm going to be sick.

Everyone in the room could tell that I was freaking out, but they couldn’t understand why. Though my mom and dad still put their hands on my arm to comfort me. Even after hurting them the way I did, they were still there for me.

This has been the worst bit of information that I've heard since waking up. I fought so hard in my dreams to stay my authentic self, and now, I'm being told that I've been in a bunch of straight relationships? Just the thought of being with a man grosses me out. Why is it that everything in real life is seemingly better except for the most important thing?

“This is the first time you reacted like that since you've been awake. Can I ask what makes this bit of information so hard to hear?” Mr. Yamada tries to investigate my response.

I take a few deep breaths to calm myself down. There’s no way I can tell them why I’m actually feeling this way. It doesn’t sound like I was even gay in real life, and there’s no way I’m going to come out to them right now. After how the parents in my dreams reacted to me being a lesbian, I don’t think I ever will.

Good thing I apparently have plenty of reasons to be this upset “I’m okay. I just can’t believe I would do something so dumb over such a small issue. To have caring parents in real life only to abandon them like that… it doesn’t sound like I’m a very good person.”

While he was translating to them, I felt my eyes drifting away from their faces. I feel so ashamed that I can’t even look at them right now. Leaving parents that haven’t shown me anything but care sounds so stupid. What I would have given to have parents like this in my dream. I need to try and make this right.

When I look back at my parents to apologize, I can tell they’re trying to hold back. They’re scared about loosing me again, so they’re being careful with their responses from this point. Which makes it only more important to try and make up for it.

“Mom, dad… I’m so sorry… I don’t know what I was thinking back then. To have just left you like that? I understand if you're still mad at me... but I hope you can give me the chance to make up for lost time."

Immediately after it’s translated to them, my mom tears up and leans in for another hug with me. She says something to me that is translated as "We were never mad, we were only sad that it felt like we lost you. No matter what, we will always be there for you."

Having my parents treat me this well is the best feeling in the world. I’ve only just met them, but it already feels like I have a lot of making up to do. The loving embrace they’re giving me right now tells me all I need to know about their true intentions. These two are nothing like the parents in my dreams. I need to fix whatever it was that I did in this life.

The crying and hugging lasts for a little longer. Even I was crying. A lot of emotions were coming from all of us.

Eventually the crying did die down though. And it led to us having a pretty dull conversation about nothing really important. I asked them things like what they did for work and how long they worked there. Small talk basically. I think all of us needed to recover after just having that heavy of a conversation.

And right now I'm not really liking the past me. What other stupid things could I have done? I have a whole college life that I don't even know anything about either. It's totally possible that I was this bad with other people too. I wonder what other nasty surprises I have waiting for me?

The worst surprise of course being if I have a boyfriend… just saying that leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. But I still have to prepare for the reality of that situation. It would be just my luck to have to break up with someone immediately after I come out of a coma. How do are you even suppose to end a relationship anyways?

Wanting to try and get any sort of information about my college life, once there is a lull in the conversation, I ask "Um I've been wondering. Did anyone else happen to visit me when I was in the coma? Like maybe friends or a… boyfriend or something?"

They discuss it among themselves before responding “I’m sorry, but besides some other family members, your parents never saw anyone else visit you. They even asked about other visitors every time they came. They hoped one of your college friends would be here so they can ask them about your life, but there was never anyone else. Eventually they just stopped asking.”
