Thousands of years ago, demons and spirits made an arrangement with humans. The demon/spirit would merge their soul with the human, and in return, the human would receive use of the demon’s or spirit’s magic.

What the demon/spirit got out of this arrangement was increasing their magic power the longer that they were tied to a human. They would live by the humans side as an animal of their choosing and only return to their worlds once either the human died or their animal vessel died.

But with living as familiars in the human world, they discovered they enjoy living that life. With their world being a rough place to live, they gravitated to the easier life on Earth. And after a while, becoming stronger kind of took a back seat to being able to live in the human world.

And as a result of humans sharing their magic, after a few generations, some humans began being born with a slight amount of magic. Though this magic mostly stays dormant in witches until they summon a familiar. The small amount of magic in their bodies before they do mostly presents itself as passive features.

The strength of ones magic is not always tied to the strength of their mothers magic. A witch with powerful magic abilities could have a child with weak magic abilities. The strength of ones magic is random.

The town the story takes place in is a fictional town called Golden Lake, located in California. It’s home to the largest coven on the West coast of the US and where a lot of non-coven witches send their children to for school. Though a large coven, the town still has a small living population of 200.

It’s situated around a very small lake in the mountains. The town main street, work areas, and schools are on one side of the lake and all of the living areas are located on the other side. It’s in a remote area of the mountains as to remain mostly hidden to the rest of the world. The only non-magic humans that ever enter town are there for tourism.

The main magic users that live in the town are Fire, Water, Wind, Plant, Illusion, and Blood. Though there are other magic types throughout the rest of the world like Earth, Shadow, and Psychic. But this town isn’t the only concentration of these magic types. Different covens throughout the world have different combinations of magic types living there.

But there used to be another type of magic user in the town that is no longer there. And that magic is Dream magic.

A few decades ago, there were just as many dream witches as other types of witches in town. They worked jobs like therapists or other mental health services due to their ability to read people’s emotions. Everything was going fine until the nightmares started.

In the year 1910, people of the town began having intense dreams that prevented them from sleeping. The sleep deprivation caused peoples bodies to weaken, allowing for vulnerability to diseases. People in town began collapsing or even dying.

In the towns panic, the Dream demons and witches were blamed. And though they fought for their innocence all the way until the end, most hadn’t believed them.

An uncoordinated and unorganized attack was lead onto the Dream witches where their familiars were hunted down and all executed. And in killing the familiars, it stripped the witch of their magic. The down didn’t stop until all Dream familiars were killed.

The nightmares ended up stopping after that. Then came a new rule that forbade Dream demons from being summoned. And with no longer being able to use magic, the Dream mages all left town and assimilated with the rest of the non-magic humans.

The town tried to make themselves feel better by comparing the purge to the Psychic demons. Psychic demons learned long ago that their magic couldn’t be trusted with the humans. After a few cases where Psychic witches became too powerful and caused a lot of suffering, Psychic demons decided to not respond to many summons from the human world any longer.

The humans believed that Dream demons were as dangerous as humans with Psychic magic, so they decided the Dream demons should stay where they couldn’t hurt the humans any longer.

Though the townsfolk now like to consider themselves more civilized than their past inhabitants, they are still taught in schools to keep a lookout for signs of Dream magic. People in the town still do not trust Dream demons.

Please excuse the cover. My artist ghosted me, but I still wanted to have a custom cover so I drew this myself.

In a world full of magic, Evelyn feels as if she's the only witch that's unable to use any. Being known as the weakest witch living in her large coven has resulted in a lonely life with no one but her familiar to keep her company. Even after recently entering her adult life, she has no confidence things will ever get any better. That is, until she befriends a mysterious stranger that appeared in town one day. After meeting Naomi, she begins to learn things about herself that she never thought possible.

This story has a romance element to it but it's not the primary focus, so be prepared for a slow burn. But rest assured, this story is very gay and has no homophobia.

I will try to update every Saturday, but there's no promises.
