They escaped the palace through the servants' tunnels.
They didn't speak until they reached the ship.
Seris waited.
Lyra turned on her.
"Who was she?"
Seris didn't answer.
"Who was the woman?"
"Her name was Elara."
"How did she know my mother?"
Seris looked at Kael.
"Ask him."
Lyra did.
Kael stared at the floor.
"Elara was my partner."
"Partner?"
"Guardian partner."
"For how long?"
"Six years."
Lyra's chest tightened.
"What happened to her?"
Kael closed his eyes.
"She died the night your mother disappeared."
"How?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"No."
"You said she died."
"That's what I believed."
Lyra stepped closer.
"Then why did she say she died?"
Kael looked at her.
"Because she did."
Silence.
"Then what did we just see?"
"I don't know."
Seris finally spoke.
"The Veil can bring back people who should remain dead."
Lyra turned.
"What does that mean?"
"Some memories become so powerful that they take shape."
"Elara is a memory?"
"Perhaps."
Lyra looked at Kael.
"Do you still love her?"
The question surprised him.
"No."
She waited.
"I loved her once."
Lyra looked away.
Kael stepped closer.
"But that ended long before I met you."
She looked back.
"Why?"
"Because she died."
His voice softened.
"And because somewhere along the way..."
He reached for Lyra's hand.
"...I met someone who made me want to live again."
Her eyes filled.
She leaned against him.
Kael wrapped his arms around her.
For a long moment, they simply held each other.
Then Lyra whispered:
"I'm scared."
"I know."
"What if my mother really is dead?"
"Then we'll find the truth."
"And if she's alive?"
"We'll find her."
"What if the Crown comes after us?"
"I'll protect you."
She looked up.
"Don't promise that."
"Why?"
"Because I don't want you to die protecting me."
Kael touched her face.
"Then I'll make a different promise."
"What?"
"I'll stay."
Lyra closed her eyes.
"That's better."
He kissed her forehead.
Then her cheek.
Then her lips.
The ship rocked gently beneath them.
Outside, thousands of lanterns floated across the night sky.
Inside, for the first time, Lyra allowed herself to believe that perhaps she wasn't alone anymore.
But far beyond the ship, beyond the clouds and the stars, something awakened.
A child's voice whispered into the darkness:
"They found each other."
A second voice answered:
"Then separate them."
And somewhere in Aetheria, the first great bell began to ring.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The sound carried across the kingdom.
The war had begun.
