I took some time at lunch to research the Mistletoe Blue cast and associates more. It’s something I definitely should have done earlier, but better a few days in than never.
Lavender’s full name is Lavender Sayers - or, as she is typically credited, Lavender Silva. Besides the teen dramedies I remember watching, she also portrayed characters in some family comedies and dramas as well. Her roles are rather versatile, going from timid and icy personalities to more fiery and perky personas.
Despite her stage name and appearance, Lavender is not Hispanic. She is Indigenous Canadian, specifically Anishinaabe, and was raised on the Chippewas reserve a few towns over. She has sometimes gotten backlash for portraying Latinas despite not being one herself, but as far as I can tell, she’s ignored it. Time will tell how long she can keep this up.
As for Marcus, he is also an indie singer on top of his acting work. He generally keeps up a more prestige image than Lavender, with delicately intimate songwriting and a heavy lean towards dramas for acting. Not much is known about his early personal life, though, beyond him being from North Carolina.
Spencer Isaacs is even more elusive online - although, to be fair, they are Daisy’s PR manager. Their social media activity is mostly just promotional activity for Daisy, their rare other client, and mildly political reposts. They were also apparently once a lawyer of some sort, but I can’t gauge much of their personality from any of this.
I also skim through Pierre’s profile. He’s acted in similarly respectable ensemble media like Marcus. However, his portfolio is more dull. I don’t bother to look into him much further.
Blossom and Glen are discussing My Dark Vanessa while Blossom runs a Daisy Butler song playlist. The songs are off her debut album, Rosehill, and Blossom is listening to a tune named “The Gardener.” It’s one of the album’s more downtempo songs - which makes sense, since Blossom and Glen are too preoccupied to really pay attention to lyrics.
I do take notice, though. As I struggle to come up with an icebreaker due to my lack of knowledge of the novel my friends are discussing, the second verse of Daisy’s song rings through my head:
Rays shine on the garden you once trampled
Roots of lilies pierce through your soiled yard
I wonder if my scars
Can tear your broken heart
And wilt your flora, wrap the garden shards
The lilies that you found wrap around your roses
Ivy green of poison, treason, lust
But tomorrow morning
I will leave you mourning
Soon forgotten, left in cinder dust
It’s certainly…verbose, that’s for sure. I’m not entirely surprised Daisy got the fanbase she did, although I don’t want to blame her. At the same time, her lyricism keeps me unsurprised by her obnoxiousness in person.
I check out my Instagram account - well, my alternate self’s Instagram - to find some styling tips fashion-wise and for facials. The first post I find is of a violet tinted girl giving tips on how to stave off hunger for 30 hours triweekly. I nonetheless keep the clip rolling in case I find her clothing looks interesting enough inspiration-wise.
“Oh my God!” Glen turns to me. “What are you doing there?”
“Don’t worry,” I reassure him, “I don’t actually believe this shit.”
“I wouldn’t think you do,” Glen states, “but…wow, this girl is horrendous.”
I’m not sure if I agree with Glen’s assessment. Perhaps she’s just a victim of pro-anorexia media, after all. But I don’t want to argue.
After School
The director has come up with several new tortures for the newest employees of Mistletoe Blue. Highlights include a choreographer being forced to belly dance in a bikini in the name of "kinesthetic training” despite having zero knowledge in belly dance, a makeup artist getting exactly two minutes to do half-done makeup (he counted), and a nauseous janitor immediately forced back to work after projectile vomiting.
Of course, I haven’t avoided the tortures either. You see, the director has assigned me a special camera setup to film a snowy scene upside down. This would be completely okay if the scene were a fantasy sequence or the recording setup were at least half decent. But I have the task of filming a poorly staged, prop crowded ski resort entrance.
Daisy has taken to insulting the set’s latest entries - a bunch of names I do not remember and probably won’t, if Lavender’s advice is anything to go by. Afterwards, though, she takes off to go on washroom cleaning duty…with Marcus.
I decide to dash off to the washroom while the director is busy answering what I can only presume to be text messages. From my chosen path, I overhear a brief conversation between the two.
“So…” Marcus groggily mumbles, “excited for summer?”
“If that means we’re free,” Daisy replies.
“I hope it does,” Marcus sighs.
Daisy takes out a cheap mint from her purse.
“Want some?” she asks Marcus.
“Ehhhhh,” he mutters, “not really my flavour.”
I hear a small crinkle sound in my right ear.
“Whatever,” Daisy says. “I’ll have it.”
“I don’t care,” Marcus explains.
They both look slouched and nearly gaunt by the time they enter the bathroom.
