Jeongin was walking in the city, Gyedanik nokcha, which was due to the leaves or plants on the terraces. He was wearing a mix of urban wear, futuristic style, haute couture, and retro garments, like a N-pop idol.
He saw someone, a woman who many people surrounded; they tried to talk to her and ask for some signatures. After he finished his coffee, he stood up and noticed a poster that he hadn’t seen before. It was an announcement for Kim Eun-ju. A famous singer and idol.
Jeongin went to the lift, and before the entrance closed, a group of guards entered and stopped it. They wore black suits and glasses. After that, Eun-ju entered, and when she saw Jeongin, she just smiled.
‘A lot of fans, isn’t it?’
All the guards were gazing at him, as if he weren’t allowed to speak to her.
‘No, no, it’s okay!’ She yelled, calming them with her hands.
‘Is this a price for fame?’
‘Yes, you can’t do whatever you want, not without them,’ she said and pointed to her guards with a smile.
‘So, it could be cool, I guess, if someone wants to love you and support you for everything you do’.
‘Yes, there’s a difference between good and bad fame,’ she laughed.
‘Exactly, you mean infame, but what I was saying is, it should feel good, right? To achieve your dreams doing something wonderful every morning’
Eun-ju was moving her head to the floor slowly; she was watching it for a while, containing her breath. When she remembered the pet’s screaming, she closed her eyes faster than a bullet train.
‘Is everything okay, lady Eun-ju?’
She stopped beaming and saw Jeongin again. ‘Yes, you’re right, good things, not like the new people who are making a mess in the suburbs.’
‘You mean the bucket man and the technology boy?’
Kim watched him and nodded, so serious. ‘They´re foreign; probably that’s the reason they don’t care about the destruction they’re doing.’
‘What destruction, lady?’
The lift stopped and opened its doors.
‘You should check it,’ cheered again, ‘bye bye,’ rejoiced and shook her hand.
‘My lady is this way,’ said one of the guards and pointed to the right.
Eun-ju took a long breath and expressed: ‘This guy was stressing me, thank god’.
Jeongin was walking in the suburbs, surrounded by grey skyscrapers, a pale gold sky, and no announcements from the buildings. His people mentioned that in the capital, the skyscrapers are coloured and have more lights and holograms; it feels like a city in motion. But here, the only movement was the people in the streets and some vehicles. The smell was smoke, and it felt hot.
There was noise from a corner, higher than cars, so Jeongin was curious about what was happening there.
The place was crowded; everyone was watching a big box, which was transmitting something in Korean about his team.
‘We don’t know yet who they are, or what exactly they are planning to do, but we discovered they are foreign, and we know this, thanks to the survivors; they told us this group only communicates in English. We are not sure if there’s a local among them, or where they came from.
When Jeongin heard that, he felt a light blade inside his heart; his hands were sweating, his breath was lower than a corpse.
We’re in trouble, damn, why should I work with these strangers? (He sighed), ok, I mustn’t be rude; I know we’re innocent, ok? The only people they don’t know are… all of them?
The announcement shows pictures of everyone’s mask, but it was an intent, not a wonderful representation at all; they didn’t name them yet, but their reputation was marked by crimes they never did, murder, for example.
What should I do?
The reporter recommended that the team reveal their real names and location, or they should live with the consequences.
‘Should I… betray…them?’ mumbled Jeongin, with a lump in his throat.
No, that thing… is horrible, and they… are not bad people; they just want to change, or at least, what Dilka says, Dilka… my friend, she’s a nice person, too. But even if I do that? They gonna…No… stop thinking this shi…
Jeongin tries to use his headphones and walk without any thought about his team, life, and dreams, just existing. He was trying to convince himself he never thought that.
When he was walking, he noticed some cops in the streets, stopping the cars to see their ID, and others who asked random people in the alleys.
In the night.
The deep opportunity was joined in Paulina’s house, and Jeongin was finishing telling what he saw in the afternoon.
‘We need to leave now.’ Quaked Rowan.
‘No, what about my dream?’
Dilka touched Jeongin’s leg. ‘Jeo, I know what you want; we know, but you should know there’s nothing we can’t do to avoid it. No one is telling you to stop; we still want to conserve this special connection with you’.
‘Just think about it the other way: it’s our destiny; probably you’ve never been welcome here, and this is a signal,’ remarked Paulina.
‘Listen, Jeongin, you want to create a group of sarpionists, and that’s what we're gonna do; we have the best samples from different parts of the world, there’s nothing against us, ok?’
‘Just the government,’ Rowan demanded.
‘Yes, but we shouldn’t care about them; just for now, we need to focus on how to get out of here. After all, they know we´re foreigners, so we can’t leave with or without our outfits and masks.’ Paulina commanded.
‘Furthermore, Jeon, Paulina and I recorded an audio of Kim In-ha; we believe you should listen to it’.
‘The revolutionary? I was waiting for him to stop what he was doing’.
‘Come on, Jeon, why do you think he’s still existing?’ asked Paulina.
‘Just reproduce the bugger audio’. Rowan ordered.
Paulina put it on the table and, grinning at Jeongin, waiting for hearing his reaction.
‘Listen, people! I’m Kim In-ha, I’m not afraid of showing myself due to my biggest dream, to change our country. I know it is hard to believe, but our government is controlling us… enter…enter…ment… Promise…’
Jeongin and Dilka were so confused; Jeongin scratched his head, and Dilka was pulling her mouth with her hands, and both saw each other, waiting for an answer. Dilka crossed her legs. ‘So… honey, I don’t need a sermon to change my opinion, but what are we supposed to hear?’
Paulina laughed with Rowan; they looked uncomfortable, holding their breaths, and Paulina raised her eyebrows. ‘We know, the thing is… your government is hiding something, and soon, we’re gonna know the truth.
A song from Jeongin’s gadgets sang, so he asked his friends to wait for him. Dilka asked what that was, but Jeongin explained it was just his best friend, Jasol Jun-yeong, and moved to another room.
Paulina was so amazed she put her hand in her mouth. ‘Oh my gosh, he has a friend; I’m so happy for him’.
Jeongin was reading the message; Jun-yeong was telling Jeongin how excited he was about the university; he finally entered after 2 years, and he will fulfil his dream of robotics engineering.
‘I’m so happy for you, Jun-yeong-ah, hope to see you again, mate!’
‘Me too, Jeongin, it’s a shame you abandoned the university, but I know you’re doing great, and one day, I’ll see your name in one of the best sarpionist in Najoemguk.’
Just finishing the messages with a nice smile, Jeongin heard some cars parking outside the flats, and some footsteps. He tried to look through the window, but some lights were pointing at it, some sirens were singing, and Jeongin felt anxitious that the covered his mouth with his hand.
When he picked up the door handle, someone else did the same, but that person held it stronger than him and pulled it out. His heart was pounding, and he was sweating.
He let out a groan; he didn’t shout because the other person was Paulina. ‘Hurry up! Jeongin, we need to leave!’
‘I was going to warn you guys,’ trembled Jeongin, and drying his hands.
Paulina picked up her outfits and other things.
Rowan was in the front, leading the squad towards his house; the police footsteps were closing, and louder every time. The police officers were screaming in their language, but Deep Opportunity continued walking so calmly.
‘What are they saying?’ Asked Paulina.
‘Something like, catch them, capture them, and be careful, they’re phadwimbs’. Dilka answered.
Jeongin nodded, and the team was finally in Rowan’s house.
‘What are we gonna do? I know, escape, but to where?’ inquired Paulina.
‘Don’t know, but if they’re here, it’s because they know about us, oh no…’
‘What?’ requested Jeongin of Rowan.
‘Jeongin… the only person who knows about me was Hải, and we saw he was receiving some people from the government; he must reveal my location’.
‘The government? It can’t be...’ groaned Jeongin, and put his head down, without any eye contact with his team.
