Yani and Kris were running to the scene. But when Yani accidentally stepped on a ragged tombstone, he felt his seventh sense trigger a blurry memory.
A woman who grew up in a loving family.
In this cemetery.
In poverty.
Happy.
A politician. Politicians. A political dynasty.
Repeated promises.
Dying in a storm.
A family buried together.
One body was lost.
“Kris, I found a clue.” Yani looked down to the tombstone. The Reyes Family. “Sharon Reyes. That’s our white lady.” Yani explains.
“I’ll get the boys to look for the missing body. We’ll make a proper burial rite for her here. Can you find the girls?”
Yani nodded.
By the east wing gate, Yani found the two stuck girls. “Usog!” A gust of black wind rushed to the vengeful ghost, and she pulled back—finally releasing the catalonans. The two of them immediately ran behind Yani.
“Are you two ok?”
Cielo nodded. “Yeah. Be careful. Tangible attacks don’t work. And, she’s fast.”
As they were talking, the white lady instantly went inches in front of Yani’s face. She had the intention of giving him a freezing scare, but Yani is Yani. That would never work on someone with equal dark energy. AN ACTUAL GHOST STARING AT ME? SO COOL!
Then, Yani smirked. “Let’s see who wins this staring contest, Sharon.”
When she heard her name, she began screaming and shuffling around the three of them. “What the-” Yani couldn’t spot where she was. It was like she had multiple bodies from the speed.
The girls behind him were trembling in fear—heavily affected by the dark energy.
“Sharon, stop it! I know that you’re mad that your family died in the storm, but-”
The ghost sent Yani flying—stuck against a tree. She was choking him. So you can touch us but we can’t touch you? How unfair. Yani coughed and wiggled his body around. “You don’t need to do this. You are mad at the empty promises, right? I understand. But you don’t need to hurt innocent people-”
“I DON’T CARE!” Her loud pitch swung the trees hard, and some glass candles broke.
Yani winced. It was like his ears were about to turn inside out. “We’re just here to help.”
“I DON’T WANT ANYONE’S HELP! DIE! SUFFER WITH ALL OF US HERE! AS LONG AS YOU’RE LIVING A GOOD LIFE, DIE!”
Yani, no longer able to talk it out, uttered, “Usog.”
Then, the dark clouds began pulling the ghost away from him.
“Usog.”
His dark energy started attacking the white lady from within her own life force.
Yani stared at the ground—not wanting to see her suffering. Especially that he was the cause.
“Usog.”
Her transparent body began fading even more—shouting, “YOU WILL ALL PAY FOR THIS!”
Cielo and Pauline both took their cleansing incense from their pockets, lit them up, and uttered, “Spirits, guide us in purifying her. Conducting Palina.”
The three men already found Sharon’s original body. It was lost among other unnamed burials.
Isagani grunted while carrying the sack filled with her bones. “This is something from a crime documentary.”
“At least my fingerprints are safe.” Rafael exhaled, phew.
“You’re framing me now?”
Kris checked on the burial hole Rafael built—ensuring that it was right beside her family’s body. “Put it here.”
Isagani respectfully placed the bunch of bones in it.
Kris took off his beaded bracelet, and gave it to the pile. “May you take this in the afterlife.”
After the spirit faded, Yani began pondering on something. He discovered that Kris was right. Some beings are too far gone—unable to reconcile their wrath and souls. He’s always been someone who thinks that it is impossible for a being to be purely evil. But now, he understood where Kris was coming from.
They may not be purely evil, and they may have their own reasons, but that doesn’t mean that they are capable of redemption.
