The next morning arrived with the kind of crisp clarity that makes everything feel sharp around the edges. I'd barely slept, Jin-seok's threatening message and Yuna's letter cycling through my mind like a broken record player. My reflection in the bathroom mirror looked as exhausted as I felt dark circles under my eyes, skin pale from stress, hair sticking up at odd angles despite my attempts to tame it with water.
The familiar routine of morning chores felt different today, weighted down by secrets I was carrying. As I scrubbed Dad's dinner dishes from the night before, I kept rehearsing how I'd tell Min-jae about the letter. The grease-stained plates seemed to mock me—here I was, worried about love letters and stalkers, while my hands were raw from dish soap and my stomach was empty because there weren't enough leftovers for breakfast.
But even in my anxiety, something else threading through my chest: anticipation. Despite everything: Jin-seok's games, the threatening messages, the uncertainty about what is real and what is manipulation.
Walking to school, every shadow made me paranoid. Was someone watching me? Were Jin-seok's 'people' cataloguing my route, my timing, my vulnerabilities?
As I approached the school gates, my heart did that familiar flutter-skip it always did when I spotted familiar silhouette. Min-jae was there, leaning against the iron railing. His school uniform was perfectly pressed, tie straight, blazer fitting his shoulders like it was tailored specifically for him. His hair catching morning sunlight, turning black strands into something that looked almost bronze.
When he saw me approaching, his face transformed. The distant, contemplative expression he'd been wearing melted into something warm and radiant. This boy. This beautiful, impossible boy who somehow chose me.
"Morning, sidekick," he said, pushing off from the railings and walking toward me with that confident stride that always made my pulse quicken."Good morning," I managed, trying to keep my voice steady despite the chaos in my head. The letter. Jin-seok. The messages. I needed to tell him everything, but how do you shatter someone's peace with words like 'we're still being stalked'?
Min-jae stepped closer, close enough that I could smell his familiar scent - vanilla. His hand came up to rest on my shoulder, a gesture that looked casual, friendly, kind of touch every friend shares. But then he leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to that intimate register that made my stomach flip.
"Can I kiss you? Please..." he teased suddenly.
My brain short-circuited. "What? No way.we're in public!" I whispered frantically, glancing around. My face was already burning with embarrassment at the thought of anyone overhearing.
Min-jae's smile turned wicked, that familiar mischievous glint appearing in his eyes. "remember in storage room?"The moment he said it, Jin-seok's face flashed before my eyes like a lightning strike. That cold, calculating expression from our confrontation. Threatening messages from last night.
I opened my mouth, finally ready to tell Min-jae everything about the letter, about Jin-seok's continued harassment, about the messages that had kept me awake all night. But before I could, familiar voice cut through my thoughts.
"Hi, sweeties!"
Woo-sung appeared beside us like he'd materialized out of thin air, his trademark grin already in place. His hand landed on my shoulder, replacing Min-jae's touch.Min-jae's expression shifted immediately. Not angry, exactly, but something possessive and sharp flickered in his eyes.
"Hey, hey, Sung," Min-jae said, his voice deceptively light but with an edge sharp enough to make me glance at him."Put your hands down. Hoon doesn't like it when anyone touches his shoulder except me."
I blinked, baffled. "Huh? When did I ever say that?"
Min-jae's grin turned downright wicked. "In my dream... on bed..."
"MIN-JAE!" Woo-sung jumped backward , his eyes wide with scandal and delight. "You're really a pervert! I didn't think you were this kind of person!"
"Hey, hey," Min-jae said, completely unrepentant, "I was dreaming about my boyfriend, not about your lover. Oh wait.." His grin turned wicked. "You're still single. My bad."
The teasing hit its mark perfectly. Woo-sung's face went red, and he sputtered indignantly while Min-jae looked pleased with himself. Despite everything - anxiety, secrets, fear lurking at the edges of my consciousness,I found myself laughing. Really laughing, the kind that bubbles up from your chest and makes everything feel lighter.
I reached out, putting one hand on Min-jae's shoulder and the other on Woo-sung's, pulling them both closer. In that moment, surrounded by their familiar chaos and warmth.
"Thanks for coming into my life," I whispered, just loud enough for them to hear. "Both of you."
Woo-sung's expression softened immediately, his mock outrage melting into something genuine and warm. Min-jae's eyes met mine, and I saw something there that made my breath catch like gratitude, wonder, love so intense it was almost overwhelming.
"Always," Min-jae said quietly, and Woo-sung nodded enthusiastically.
"Group hug!" Woo-sung declared, throwing his arms around both of us before we could protest.
For a moment, standing there in the embrace of my two best friends while other students streamed around us, I almost forgot about Jin-seok entirely. Almost forgot about the letter burning a hole in my backpack, about the threatening messages, about the feeling of being watched. This was what mattered—this warmth, this belonging, this sense of being chosen and cherished.
Classes passed in their usual blur of note-taking, half-heard lectures, and stolen glances across the room. Min-jae sat to my right, and every time our eyes met, he'd shoot me a quick small smile, but enough to send my heartbeat skittering.
During Maths class, he slipped me a folded note. Inside, in his messy scrawl, were just four words: "Storage room after lunch?" followed by a tiny heart doodle.I had to bury my face behind my textbook to keep from grinning like a complete idiot.
When the lunch bell rang, Min-jae and Woo-sung flanked me as we headed toward the cafeteria.
"You okay, Hoon? You seem quiet today."Min-jae asked.
Perceptive as always. I forced a smile. "Just tired. Didn't sleep well."
We were almost at the cafeteria when nature called with sudden urgency. "You guys go ahead.I need to use the washroom. I'll catch up with you."I said.
Min-jae immediately perked up. "Ah, I also need to pee. Sung, you go ahead.I'll bring Hoon to the cafeteria."
Woo-sung's eyebrows shot up, and his grin turned absolutely wicked. "Hey, hey, don't make me a fool. You don't have to pee. you just want to do shameless flirting with Hoon!"
Before Min-jae could protest, Woo-sung grabbed his ear and started tugging him toward the cafeteria. "Come on, lover boy. Atlest Let Your man do his business in peace."
"Sung, let go! That hurts!" Min-jae protested, but he was laughing despite himself.
I watched them disappear into the crowd of students, Woo-sung's voice echoing back: "You can't survive five minutes without your boyfriend, Min-jae!"
The hallway was mostly empty, the lunch rush drawing everyone toward food rather than facilities. I took care of my business quickly, my mind already planning how I'd tell Min-jae about the letter.
But as I stepped out of the washroom, adjusting my uniform and running a hand through my hair, I nearly collided with someone coming out of the girls' washroom across the hall.
Seo Yuna.
We both froze, staring at each other in the suddenly thick silence of the empty hallway. She looked different from the confident girl who'd made her public confession days ago. Her usually perfect hair was slightly mussed, her eyes red-rimmed like she'd been crying.
"Did you read my letter?" she asked immediately, her voice small and urgent.
My throat felt dry. "Yes."
The moment I confirmed it, relief and panic warred across her features. She looked around frantically, checking for anyone who might overhear, then grabbed my arm and pulled me back into the boys' washroom.
"Hey, what are you..." I started to protest, but she was already pushing me toward the back corner, away from the door.
"I'm really sorry, Hoon," she said, her words tumbling out in a breathless rush.I studied her face, looking for signs of deception, manipulation, anything that might indicate another layer of Jin-seok's game.
Wait. Are you really sorry ? Or is this just another one of Jin-seok's schemes, like that fake letter?
"No, no!" Her head shook violently. "That letter was supposed to be a love letter, according to his instructions. But I couldn't do it. I couldn't let you think I actually..(Stopped)" She took a shaky breath. "Jin-seok has no idea that you know this is all his plan. That letter was my decision, my guilt. I couldn't live with myself if I didn't tell you the truth."
My mind raced, trying to process this information while simultaneously staying alert for the sound of anyone entering the washroom. "Okay, but withdrawing your invitation..? was that your plan too? Another way to protect yourself from guilt?"
"No," she said immediately. "Withdrawing the invitation was Jin-seok's idea. Everything except content of that letter was his plan."
"Why should I trust you?" I asked bluntly.
Her face crumpled slightly. "You don't have to. I just wanted to tell you everything. I don't want to drown in my own shame anymore." She looked away, her voice dropping to barely above a whisper. "I've never hated myself more than these past few days."
Despite everything, despite manipulation, fear and uncertainty.I felt a pang of sympathy for her. Whatever game Jin-seok was playing, Yuna was clearly caught in it as much as Min-jae and I were.
"Okay, last questions," I said. "Did you know from the beginning that something was going on between me and Min-jae? If yes ,Why did you ask Min-jae to meet you in the park? Was that also Jin-seok's plan?"
Yuna shook her head immediately. "No, I had no idea you guys like each other. I only realized when Min-jae grabbed my collar and confessed his obsession with you." She paused, seeming to gather herself. "And asking him to meet me in the park was Jin-seok's idea. I asked him what I was supposed to do there, and he said, 'Just make Min-jae more jealous. Make him angry. Say whatever you want to make him jealous. Curse Hoon if possible, right in front of him.'"
My blood chilled. The casual cruelty of it, the way Jin-seok had orchestrated every moment of our pain for his own twisted satisfaction.
"I asked Jin-seok many times why," Yuna continued, her voice growing smaller. "Then he added, 'Also, apologize to Hoon tomorrow for the confession and withdraw your invitation.' When I pressed him again why he wanted me to withdraw if he was the one who made me confess in the first place. Instead of answering my question, he just said, 'Do what I'm telling you. You don't need to know why.'"
These pieces were clicking together in my mind, forming a picture that was both clearer and more terrifying than before. Jin-seok hadn't just wanted to break Min-jae and me apart.he'd wanted to watch us suffer. The confession, the jealousy, the reconciliation, all of it had been entertainment for him.
But before I could ask any more questions, Yuna suddenly dropped to her knees on the washroom floor, bowing like a servant before a master.
"I was threatened, Hoon," she said, her voice breaking.
The sight of her kneeling on the grimy washroom floor, made something twist in my chest. Whatever her role in Jin-seok's game, she was clearly paying an emotional price for it.
"Yuna, get up," I started to say, reaching toward her.
But she was already scrambling to her feet, panic written across her features. "I have to go," she said, rushing toward the door. "I've said too much."
She yanked the door open and fled, leaving me standing alone in the washroom with even more questions than before.
I stood there for a moment, processing everything she'd told me. Jin-seok's plan was even more elaborate and cruel than I'd imagined. But at least now I had a clearer picture of what we were dealing with.
I was so lost in thought that I barely registered the sound of footsteps. It wasn't until I stepped out of the washroom that I realized someone had been standing in frint of door
Lee Hyun-woo,classmate friend. His eyes widened when he saw me emerge from washroom, and something sly and knowing crossed his expression.
I tried to avoid eye contact and head toward the cafeteria.
