ACTUALLY breaking the news

I compulsively checked for a response email every twenty minutes after that. By wimping out on just talking to them, I actually increasing the mental torture I was going through. Why hadn't they checked their emails? Mum had taken to checking hers twice daily! She'd have seen it by now!
Except... she was in Liverpool, visiting family. No access to the internet.
I couldn't wait the time it would take her to get home, on the basis that she might not check her emails. I had to call her.
She said afterwards it was a good thing I did - when she and Dad read the email later, she said they saw a ring in a cowboy hat and wondered if I was sending them a coded message.
