Technically, the Russian word "крошка" (KROSH-kah) doesn't mean "dear", - in this context it means "baby" or "little one" and implies female, though can also be used to describe a baby boy. The literal meaning is "crumb" (as in bread crumb) and a crumb happens to be female gendered in Russian - it's one of the many languages where most inanimate objects have genders...
