When Making an OC

I've noticed that there are are plenty of comic making note of the fact that we creators tend to unfairly burden our characters with problems, but never really one talking about WHY. Even if the character doesn't get a story that's actually written, it's good to think about the message you're trying to say when you toss trauma or other negative points onto a character, because otherwise, they'll either become a mary/gary sue, or an asshole. Nobody wants to see either of those in a story. At least, that's what I think.
Today's question for all of you: Who is your favorite character with issues, and what sort of point or conversation do they make with those issues?

Spongebob, hands down. His pants are too square for his circular heart, but he carries on anyway.
