In Mystery Science Theater 3000, they do obscure references all the time. Even for their time, some of the jokes were quite niche, but they had the advantage of excellent writing. I don't know if I have the same advantage here, but in case you're curious, back in the mid 2000's there was a commercial by a car oil company. It featured an overly excited Scottsman wipping people with a car's dipstick... Yea I'm being serious. XD
