Do we as doctors tend to miss the forest for the trees? Perhaps.
On a small scale, we sometimes focus on a minor symptom while overlooking the underlying problem. But we also do the same thing when it comes to the larger-scale "problem" of death. Cancer is a good example. When someone "defeats" cancer, we count it as a victory, but the same patient will eventually succumb to something else, whether it be old age, another disease, or a good old-fashioned axe-to-the-brain! The truth is that we will all die. Do we as doctors really "save" anyone? Or are we just treating the "symptom" of disease, while ignoring the "diagnosis" of death?? *cue suspenseful music*
