The tragic and mysterious death of his wife and 5 year old daughter sent Jeremoth into a major depression. He started heavily drinking (which he never had before) and went into, what his coworkers described, a complete mental breakdown. This was the start of his obsession with bringing the dead back to life and to hopefully save others from the severe grief he had felt.
