A short story inspired by my mum’s pre-holiday compulsive cleaning and, as always, the amazing Slavic folklore.
For those who are not familiar with Slavic culture:
Domovoi (or domovoy) – a protective house spirit, who lives behind the oven and helps around the house.
Also, it is worth noting, that traditionally during celebration of winter solstice, in Slavic houses a podłaźniczka (or podłaźnik/полазник) was placed. Podłaźniczka was made from the very top of a conifer (the rest of the tree stayed in the forest!), decorated with fruits, nuts, cookies, ornaments made from straw, paper or thin bread. Podłaźniczka was believed to bring good harvest, prosperity and all sorts of blessing to the household.
