Monkey Island stars Guybrush Threepwood, a wannabe pirate solving trials on to earn status on Melee Island. When the Mayor is kidnapped, he’s forced to build a crew and set sail to the cursed Monkey Island to stop the Ghost Pirate LeChuck once and for all.
--Verdict--
Art: I played the Anniversary Edition on Xbox, and (although this is probably blasphemous) I liked the art on the remake better. Although you can toggle between the new and the old whenever you’d like, I found the controls on the new version less clunky and the visuals much easier to process (being painted v. pixel art). The fact that all of the dialogue is now fully voice acted was also a nice touch.
Gameplay: Read, interact, pick up, put down. Simple point-and-click. In most cases I’d try to click everything just to be sure.
Replayability: Very low. Unfortunately, once you’ve solved a puzzle there’s not much sense going back.
Would I recommend? I love point-and-clicks, and this is still one of the best ones I’ve ever played. The dialogue is witty and breaks the fourth wall often, the puzzles are sometimes ridiculous but not to outlandish, and the art (especially in the remake) is lots of fun. This game makes me fondly remember back when LucasArts was not only alive and kicking, but delivering great adventures.
