Morris and the Bet

Before the constitutional convention, Alexander Hamilton sent a letter to Gouverneur Morris that basically said “Yo slap Washington on the back and say ‘My dear General, How happy I am to see you well.’ and I’ll buy dinner for you and 12 friends." By this point Washington’s name was already a legend so no one would dare mess with him… except for these two. So Morris, being the fool he was, was like psh that’s easy. AND HE DID IT. When he did, Washington gave him the worst death stare that you can possibly imagine, until he walked away. Hamilton Happily paid up and at the dinner Morris proclaimed ‘I have won the bet, but paid dearly for it, and nothing could induce me to repeat it.’
