Not sure about the dog bit. The dog's fate does tend to swing towards polar opposite ends depending on the tone of the movie. If movie is edgy/Oscar bait, the dog has cancer. If the movie is a light-hearted flick, the dog's immortal. (Compare the dog in I Am Legend to the dog in Independence Day, who outruns an explosion from an alien invasion)
