People just got to know where you're from. It can help strengthen bonds, like finding you share the same favorite sports teams. And most of the time one needs to modify the answer based on where the person asking is from. Chances are they won't know where your hometown is, but most people know where San Francisco is, for instance. But when it comes to Asians, full and Hapa alike, this question often comes with an infuriating follow up question.
