They each have different rates, a rate is how you are able to communicate and be seen. There are five levels to this, 0 being alive and 4 being the most simple form. 0 is your living stage. 1 means you have only died once. 2 means you have died twice. 3 means you have died 3 times, and 4 means you have died 4 times. If you die again while in the fourth stage of life then your soul will finally be reincarnated to a new body on the 0 stage.
