Just to be clear , Zeus did not turn them to trees right away. After destroying the town for lack of hospitality , Zeus turn philemon's farm into a temple. Then he made Philemon and his wife the gardian of the temple. UPON their death , the couple were changed into an intertwining pair of trees, one oak and one linden,
