All across the political spectrum, you're bound to meet people in love with their own revolutionay cred more than with the cause they defend that will make intentionally inflamatory blanket comments to stir controversy and, when confronted by someone who disagrees with them by a milimeter, will answer "It doesn't matter what people think!"
Truth is, like Beebee said, unless you only want to speak to people who already agree with you, it DOES matter what people think!
Take, for example, the tricky concept of cultural appropriation. I'm going to try to explain it. Try...
First nations activists use that to mean "Stop treating our sacred stuff like jokes!" but critics of the concept use it to shut off all discussion about racism (like Beebee fears) for fear that some SJW will come bursting through your door, swat-team style, to stop you from doing yoga, eating chinese food and using arab numerals.
Actually, it is not insulting (and IMHO, inevitable) to use stuff from other culture, as long as you spend the effort of knowing a thing or two about it beyond the "cool" appearances. Otherwise, even before it was culturally insensitive, it was ridiculous as fuck. just think about white people who get asian tattoos that don't know what they mean or white teenagers (like I was at thirteen) who love rap but don't understand what it even means. Before them, rap was smart and had a social conscience, like Grandmaster Flash. After MTV, it was 50 Cent, another racial cliché.
