The little girl was sitting in the shade of a building watching the people pass by. She was covered in filth and sweating from the heat. Even though it was over 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius), she would not take off her coat and scarf; she knew that if she did they would be stolen. The girl worked hard to get warm clothes, she would not part with them just because of the heat.
The girl watched as people passed her by, and even though she looked so pitiful they would not meet her eye. A few people glanced in her direction but quickly looked away when the girl tried to speak. The girl even had a hat on the ground; as if begging for help. The girl finally rested her arms on her bent knees with her head on her arms and leaned against the wall.
Very faintly the girl started hearing a young woman’s voice. The voice was clear and crisp and sounded very kind. The young girl peeked at the young woman, who was still a ways away. The young woman was wearing a white dress with flat shoes, her hair was long and silky. The young woman seemed to shine brightly in the summer sun. The young woman was handing out flyers to the people passing by, and was slowly making her way to where the little girl was sitting.
The young woman was saying something as the people passed by but the little girl could not quite understand her. The people who received the flyers from the young woman would smile as they received their flyers and did not throw them away, but instead they would fold the flyers neatly and put them in their pockets or purses. Finally the young woman was close enough to the little girl and she could understand what the young woman was saying: “If you need any help, my foundation will gladly assist!”
When a gust of wind took a flyer from the young woman’s hand it landed gently next to the little girl. The flyer read: “We help those that cannot get help! Please just ask and we will assist!!” The flyer was very neatly made and you could tell that it was full of a gentle warmth. The young woman continued to hand out the flyers, smiling and laughing with the people passing. The young woman was close to being out of flyers and the little girl needed to gather up her courage to ask for young woman’s help before she was gone.
After several minutes of trying to get up some courage and approach the young woman for help, the little girl was still quite nervous. No one had ever approached the little girl with good intentions, and when the little girl did ask for help…she never received it. The little girl tried to say “Excuse me?” but no sound came out of her mouth. When was the last time she spoke? The little girl tried to remember; it was probably last week. When was the last time someone listened? Much, much longer ago.
The young woman had finally passed out all the flyers and took a big sigh and started smiling sweetly to herself as she looked around at the good job she had done. The young woman started to slowly walk away.
“Excuse Me?” said the little girl in a very faint whisper.
The young woman still walked away, maybe the little girl did not say it loud enough.
“Excuse Me!” said the little girl with a louder voice, but still not in a normal speaking tone.
The young woman paused ever so slightly, and the little girl thought that the young woman had heard her speak, but the young woman kept going. The young girl became very anxious; this may be a chance for help and yet she can’t speak loud enough.
With all she could muster the little girl exclaimed: “Please help me!” while trying to get up but due to hunger she could only get up to her knees.
Finally the young woman stopped and looked back. The young woman’s beautiful face gazed upon the filthy little girl…
The young woman’s face contorted into a sneer. Looking at the little girl was enough to disgust the young woman and she rolled her eyes, flipped her long hair around and continued to walk away.
The little girl collapsed back down to the ground. Tears were starting to form and she was starting to shake. Why? Why does no one help the little girl? She is a human being too. Everyone needs help and everyone gives their help to others, but why will no one help her?
It felt as if her heart was breaking, she had finally mustered up the courage to ask for help and yet…not only was no help given but the sheer disdain that was given to her was enough to feel as though her heart was sliced into tiny pieces by a knife.
Some people will only ask for help when they truly need it and yet…why will no one help them?
