The waters calmed, light ate its way into the cave, the girl emerged from a narrow crack in the wall. "Hey! Kid! Where are you?"
"Here..." Sitting down on the ledge, it ended with a slope where he could safely go down.
"Whoo!" The girl shouted, smiling, merrily prancing on the side of the river. He made his way down. "We did it!" She said.
He was about to say something when he heard a crumbling noise. "Mira!"
He tried to boost his legs into running, but the cramps held him back. She looked up, a stalagmite left the ceiling. "Mira!" The earth quaked, the tremor pulled him into submission, taking his balance and making him kneel. "Mira!"
He jumped down and saw a pile of boulders, his head was beating him, eyes burning, hands and feet turning pale the moment he saw red liquid escape from under the rubble.
The ear piercing sound corrupted his mind, digging through the rubble, throwing rock after rock. "Mira!" His knees were rusting while he was gasping shallow breaths.
"Here..." A voice came from just beyond the walls, the girl was on the side.
"Mira! Mira!" He held the girl tightly, crushing her with his hug.
"Ow! Watch the side!"
"Oh! Sorry..."
She gave him a giggle and a pat on the head.
She stood, dusting off the debris from her dress when she noticed the ground was flooded with blood. The boy examined the rocks, a paw was resting beneath the rubble. The shallow night took them away, leaving them without words.
"I wanted to get even with them someday... But not like this." She said. "It's all my fault... If I moved sooner..."
"It's not your fault. He did what he needed to do."
"But why me?"
He couldn't respond.
Her eyes turned into slits in the boy's direction.
"That monster was after you. Why?"
"I... I don't know."
"You know something, tell me the truth, now!"
"I don't know!"
"You came from a room, you're hearing voices, a monster was after you and these dogs were protecting you. Why?"
The boy stood in silence.
"I... I'm sorry." She said.
"Mama is sick... I... I don't wanna leave her alone..." squeezing his pajamas in his hands. "I just wanna go home..."
She stood silent, caressing the boy in her arms as he cried. "I'm sorry."
I wanna go home... Please... I just wanna go home.
